CV axles. Adapters are dumb. Gotta be a better way

So I'd like to share my idea.  Maybe someone has done it before.  Seems most good ideas aren't new.  So here is what I had in mine.  First picture.  Nissan 4X4 stub axle out of an R180 which will also fit a R160.  On top is a VW CV axle, a type 2 or whatever comes on these kits we install into our 510's.  The CV fits into a counter bore but is a little to small.  So I googled the 930 CV diameter, it's 108mm about 1.5mm to big.  No problem.  I expected some machine work.  The second picture is a 280zx companion flange (think that's what they are called?) it fits the splines on the 510 stub axle.  It has the same size counter bore.  So if the bore was enlarged and a 6 hole pattern was added the 930 axles would bolt on without using a stupid aluminum adapter that comes loose all the time.  Also I can fit the proper German joints.  Not the garbage Empi joints which are manufactured with slop for off roading.  I don't need the articulation.  

 

Yes I am aware of the welding options, I've seen them and will admit its better then the aluminum adapter.  I think this idea is even better.

I like these ideas, but isn't the diff to spindle shaft length another issue?

 

 

You can get the VW CV's in any length, which is the cool part.  That's why I want to sort this out.  So I can have them on my narrowed setup.

Mario from TSR has/had a setup for the r200.. Driveshaft also has a setup for r180

 

 

They both used dumb adapters don't they?  Might be alright if you don't drive it that much.  Mine kept coming loose and the cheese Empi joints had to much slop for my liking.  They are now on a shelf collect dust.

As you guys likely know, there have been NUMEROUS versions of the CV axle kits for the Z cars, which I believe also fit the 510's.  With racing the Z cars, the OUTER stub axle can shear, causing a potentially catastrophic issue........the wheel & hub will simply come off, and/or the axle shaft will potentially catapult the car like a pogo stick......this almost happened to a Z vintage racer in CA......he DID pogo stick it at speed, but thank God the car did NOT roll over!!  We recently had a local vintage racer shear his 240Z outer stub axle, but he was at a low speed, rolled off the track, only realizing how close he came to a really bad situation, when the flatbed pulled the car up on the bed......the wheel was hanging on by the brake rotor inside the caliper.....that was all that was holding the wheel in place!!  There have been a couple of guys making the Z outer stub axle flanges out of billet, but they too can shear.  We have gone to the later 280Z stub axles in the 240Z, based on what we have read online, but again, the later 280Z outer stub axles can also shear.  Ugh.  We have been looking hard at all of the suppliers for the various "parts" that would withstand the vigors of racing, but there are no absolutes.  Basically, all of these CV kits with spacers complicate these matters.  We would LOVE to see an inner & outer stub axle flange with the 6 bolt Porsche CV bolt pattern, so we can eliminate the "adapters".  We just bought a DriveShaft Shop CV kit for our latest 240Z vintage race build, with the OEM Porsche CV's..........we have been running a CV axle kit with the Empi CV's last season on our other Z, and they are already too "loose" for our liking.  Bottom line, it takes two custom made stub axles to do this.........inner & outer.  My 2cents!

I had a rear dog bone axle break on me.  Pretty exciting.  I'm going to stick with the stock out stub axle for now.  If I have issues I'll upgrade later, using the Z31 stub if required.  For now I just want something that doesn't come loose.  It's annoying having something on your daily driver that requires so much upkeep.  I'm always worried they are coming loose.

No, TSR uses chromoly stub axles/flanges with Porsche 930 CV axles. There are no adapters. The trailing arm axle is also chromoly. Meant to take lots of power, but come at a price.

Finding those 300zxtt axles are impossible for the person who doesnt want to pay for TSR.  I wonder where they get them... cause I looked super hard.

 

Those truly are the only bolt in design (no adapters) at the moment, that I can find anyway.

 

I was thinking the same as Icehouse with mating the 930 cv directly to the inner (wheel side) stub, but using a stock subaru axle out of the diff.  Sending it out to get shortened and splined to fit the 930.

 

I also did this, which is a subaru stub, machined and welded onto a 930 hub.  Then do as Icehouse is proposing.

I like that setup!   Although when my suspension is narrowed the axles would need to be shortened.  That's the one thing I like about the VW axles, you can buy them in any length really easily.

These kits don't use adapters.. The stubs mate directly to the 930 cv.. Porsche/VW stuff.. They are exp. atleast the TSR ones, but they are very high quality and are for they r200.  The driveshaft shop stuff is for the r180 Subi setup and also mates direct to the r180 930 CVs adapters that they make..  Its also possible just cost a little extra, but worth the money in my book.

That's good to know.  If my idea doesn't work out I'm going to have to order some.
