jbirds510
So im sorting out a no start at key issue today and installing a relay for the ignition circuit on my 77 620 kc and Im looking at the harness diagram and i see this relay called floor sensor relay. What is it and why is it needed? Looking forward to a reply Quote Link to comment
abbylind
I think thats a sensor for an overtemp on the catalytic converter...... 1 Quote Link to comment
jbirds510
Removing it. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
All the floor sensor relay does, is turn the floor temp light on in the dash when the ignition is first turned on... to show that the bulb is working and not burnt out. The only other thing it does is turn the warning light on when the sensor says the floor is too hot. It doesn't affect the starter. Do you have an automatic? 1 Quote Link to comment
jbirds510
Yes, it’s an auto Mike. I didn’t figure it was related but discovered it while unwrapping my loom in the engine bay to clean and inspect the wires for cracks or breaks. I’m inclined to include the new relay wiring for the start solenoid into the harness before re wrapping it all up. I also discovered another weird component that member heretic discovered was a speed switch for the EGR that I’ll be omitting from the harness I think. Don’t think I’ll ever need to concern over “smog” where I am. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If you are having no cranking of the starter with the key, the automatic has an interlock that prevents starting in any position other than PARK and NEUTRAL. Switch on the transmission my be out of whack or the plug unplugged. Quote Link to comment
jbirds510
Do you know if the plug is accessible without going under the truck? Maybe through the shifter hole in the tunnel? Quote Link to comment
distributorguy
Only if you flip the truck over. Then you won't need to go under it. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
There will be two pairs of wires in a harness going back to the transmission behind the starter. Two are for the reverse lamps. Two are for the interlock. I think the reverse light wires are Black/Red stripe. The other two have to be the interlock. You could join them and see if the starter will work then. Maybe the starter is faulty. Jumper 12 volts to the starter solenoid and see if the starter even cranks the engine over. 1 Quote Link to comment
jbirds510
Thanks Mike, when I bought the truck the PO had a push button starter switch bypassing the key for the start position so the starter is working and bonus it’s a reduction gear starter . I’ll bypass the lock out and see what happens that’s a great Idea! Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Wow, push button starting. I mean how lame is that? All cars start normally with the key why fuck with this? What next an extra door handle? Dual wiper blades? Quote Link to comment

Just fix stuff correctly.. it’s crazy how many people out there call that a permanent repair haha Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Well I try always to keep in mind worst case scenarios when I fix/replace something. What if you lend your vehicle out and the driver has no idea that in an emergency stop you have to double pump the brakes? or a simple honk of the horn could keep a kid from walking out in front of you but you can't find the horn button because someone put a house light switch on the steering column (seen this) or trapped in the car unconscious and no one can open the doors because the handles were shaved and you need a remote to operate the solenoid? A semi T bones you because you shaved the side marker lights and you were invisible stalled across an intersection in the dark. 1 Quote Link to comment
Charlie69
I would not loan a vehicle that has a brake problem. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Good..... but you are not everybody. I was suggesting hypotheticals in the real world. Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
I would not loan a vehicle that has a brake problem. My buddy did just that to me.... needed a truck to pick up my motorcycle.. Brakes worked but would not lock up... Had to make a quick stop and it just kept rolling. Little swearving and alot of brake pedal pumping and got lucky and only clipped the guys tail light. So people will let someone else drive there unsafe vehicle... Quote Link to comment
