banzai510(hainz)
My square box type batter hold down has rotted out and can seem to find any new ones near by. What are people using to hold down battery besides Rbber cord/Bungy staps. I would like to use the stock holes on end with the threaded hooks. They type I see now is the one that goes across the middle but the inner fender well don't have a hole or mount to use the hooks Photos would help. My option is to go across the top from Pos to neg side with a bar type set up and hold it that way but don't want to use metal in case it slides and hits the posts 1 Quote Link to comment
d.p
Mine came with some straight hooks that use the stock holes and a little rubber washer/clip on the top. No idea if they are OEM or not. His what it looks like: https://flic.kr/p/Pe2aPu Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
cant see needs to be closer, but I think I know what you did. 1 Quote Link to comment
DanielC
The stock battery hold down is very simple. Four pieces of sheet metal, bent into a "L" shape, then spot welded together. Then two sheet metal loops are attached to each end. I can take a picture later tonight, i have to be at work in an hour. 1 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
DanielI will ck it out 2mrow. My stock one was gone along time ago.(was hoping you chime in on this one anyways.) My battery keeps getting that white shit on there and corrodes the square HOLD down. O Riley/Schucks used to sell these by the tons but they don't have it anymore. I clean it and keeps coming back. I thought it was from overcharging. I don't know. Some one says too much moisture? Well my battery is old and not holding a charge on a real cold day(it charging) so I got a new battery with cables and just want to get a nice hold down for it. Might even get that GR starter sold thru TSI Automotive (Denso). 1 Quote Link to comment
DanielC
I need to make a hold down for another of my 521 trucks. Once I set up my small sheet metal brake, it is not that big of a deal to make more than one hold downs. What is the size of the battery you are using? 2 Quote Link to comment
zed1
DanielC, Is Item #6 the one you are making? http://www.carpartsmanual.com/datsun/pickup-1965-1972/electrical-1300-(j13)/battery#PhotoSwipe1517787879745 Here is another style I have seen on the 520/521: https://www.tractortool.com/tractor-parts/sheet-metal/nca10718a-battery-hold-down.html Keith 1 Quote Link to comment
DanielC
No, to either one. 520 hold downs are different than 521 hold downs. The loops on the end are not centered on 521 hold downs. 2 Quote Link to comment
gene knight
i need a few of these battery hold down brackets if anyone is making them 3 for 521 and 3 for 620 1 Quote Link to comment
mklotz70
As soon as I saw it was Hainz asking about battery hold downs, I was going to jump on here with a bungy cord response!!! LOL!!!!!! Maybe we can find you one with chromed ends/hooks. :) 1 Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
Just drill a hole through the center (there may be a plastic injection molding mark to guide you) and run a piece of allthread straight through. Post pics 1 Quote Link to comment
dat521gatherer
DanielC please count me in on one if you decide to make multiples of these. I'll pay your price. 2 Quote Link to comment
dat521gatherer
Here's what an original looks like at least for the later 521 I'm not sure when the change was. Mine needs to be rebuilt on two sides. 3 Quote Link to comment

wayno
The issue here is that batteries are all different sizes these days, not everyone uses the same size battery like they used to, so all one can do is make one size and then everyone will have to buy that battery if they want to use that hold down. I make my own hold downs myself, I adapt to my personal needs, I generally go with a bar across the short side like in my 520 in the photo below. My 520 actually has a place for the hooked rod on both sides. It appears that I also drilled another hole or it was already there where a tang is that I also used to hold the battery solid in one place. I did all this because it is very tight in this vehicle and I didn't want the battery moving around, it really doesn't have a large tray for the battery. Anyone ever notice the the posts on the batteries are closer to the edges than they used to be? 2 Quote Link to comment
Charlie69
Wayno that is the stock way the hold downs bolted on on the 520s. Quote Link to comment

wayno
The first time I drove that truck on the road was to this local meet out in East Vancouver, first thing that went wrong was the RV drive line I have in it would not stay engaged, luckily when I went around a corner I was able to drive it up on the curb before it stopped, next when I stopped at the hardware store I smelt something and lifted the hood and the battery was laying against the side of the block, I am lucky it didn't start a fire, I got the bolts I needed and continued on to the meet. At the meet I installed the bolts before the UCA fell off as they were barely threaded in there, then on my way out of the meet I went over a speed bump and tore the exhaust off, I made it home without any more issues. Since then the driveline has been altered so it stays engaged, the exhaust is piped above all the cross members, and the battery will not move from where it is, and I raised the front around an inch so the frame doesn't drag on everything, I also learned how to drive a low vehicle properly. 2 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
MIne looks like the Schucks version of Dat521gatherer in post 13. Its shot. I like Waynos set up but I don't have a junction point to hook to on the inner fender well. A generic version of this that goes from front to back would be best to make to use existing hook points. A composite I got to measure the battery. Its a smaller one I got from Walmart 1 Quote Link to comment
Charlie69
The mount Wayno is showing is a 520, the 521s are like DanielC and Dat521gatherer are showing. I will be running an optima Battery in my 520 so I will be running this battery tray and mount. https://optimatrays.com/collections/optima-25-trays/products/25-slip-clamp-tray Quote Link to comment
G-Duax
I always used stainless, less it ends up looking like crap again in 6-months. Oh, and I never use anything like a conventional battery any more, strictly an Odyssey guy these days. Smaller, lighter, and lasts a lot longer than any Optima I had in the past. My 620 has a PC620 (hm, the numbers match!) in it, laying on it's side, on the original mount. Quote Link to comment
KELMO
Looks very similar to a 1200 hold down. Although I thought the loops for the "J" bolts were offset. 1 Quote Link to comment
