Thanks for the link! If it were open the wheels should spin in opposite directions when the driveshaft is spun, right? Because this unit turns the wheels in the same direction when turning the driveshaft. Strange thing is that if I turn a half-shaft in one direction, the other half-shaft turns in the opposite direction.

No. Assuming equal drag if you spin the DS the wheels should spin the same.

Or one will spin more (up to 100% of the input ratio)

Well, it looks like California Datsun sold an open diff and passed it for a CLSD. Time to contact them and see about a refund.

We wish you the best of luck.  Al is a scammer at heart.  He doesn't frequent here because he's been so "unfairly" "maligned".

I've seen open diffs that both wheels turned together in the same direction when the pinion is turned, but if you held one still the other would spin easily.

If you turn a wheel on an open diff while holding the pinion still, the other side will spin the reverse.

A clutch LSD the wheels are physically locked and turn together in the same direction. I doubt if anyone is strong enough to overcome the breakaway setting and to hold a CLSD wheel while the other spins.

Viscous LSDs are fluid coupled and (I assume) 'softer' in their engagement, could be turned opposite directions at low speeds?

His response

Thank you for the information. We have a 30 day warranty or exchange policy. Since its been several months there is no longer any remaining warranty. We are resellers of these parts and there is no way for us to test a differential. The supplier we purchased this from is out of the county for a few weeks. I will see what he says, however since its been so long there is no way to verify this information, but I will try. Sorry about that.

I asked who the vendor was, "That's none of your business, why did it take you so long to figure out it wasn't a lsd?". Classic deflect and also convenient the vendor is gone. I'm getting ebay involved

I know a lot of people never look at feedback scores on eBay, or they don't really realize what trouble they are getting into by buying from someone with less than 100% positive.

Personally, I avoid buying from anyone with less than 99.5%, and if it's something I really need, and hard to find, I may take a chance with poorer feedback, but then inspect it very closely the minute it hits the door.

Cali-Datsun only has a 98.8% feedback....

"All of a sudden it started making noise, then started losing power. I limped the car home and tried to get it up the driveway, the engine just died."

Why do people do this?

A $100 tow bill is never as much as the extra damage you cause by trying to "limp the car home".

Don't be that person !

Lesson learned. I used to think that ~98% was ok for ebay scores. I suppose the only good thing is that the diff, although open, is functional. Time to reseal and move on with other projects.

The problem is eBay effed up their feedback system to make everyone look favorable. Neutral and negative feedback drops off the radar after 1(?) year so it doesn't accumulate.

And it is impossible to leave neutral, or negative feedback on dead beat bidders.

Given that I purchased this late last year eBay may not be able to assist with some sort of refund/return. I should've done a better job of checking the diff to verify that it was an LSD! The best I can do now is leave some professionally-worded negative comments on Yelp/Google for his business and hope to steer others away from Cali-Datsun.

On a different note, does the wear pattern on the ring look good?

Can't see it good enough to say.

Looks smooth, but is the contact surface worn deeper than the surface that isn't contacted by the pinion ?

Seen a lot of old gear sets that are just fine.

Usually the only problems I run into is rust pitting, due to the car sitting un-driven for decades, and humidity gathering on the gears.

Minor pitting can be corrected by a good thick layer of moly coating.

But anything deeper is tossed into the scrap pile.

If he sold you a LSD differential, it doesn't matter how long "out of warranty" you are. He simply didn't fulfill his end of the bargain.

And these shops who don't understand why you didn't notice the problem earlier...? Have they never been involved in a long term project? Sometimes a package will remain un-opened for months here in my shop, but then, I trust my vendors.

I'd threaten lawsuit against that mother$%*^&*er. See what he says to that.

Their facebook page is always very active, displaying whole cars, engines etc being shipped off to customers. Im curious how happy they are after the fact...
