Trod8812
I removed my head to replace the head gasket and the chain got bound up at the bottom sprocket. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is a specific way the chain has to go back on, does one of the timing marks on the chain have to match the hole that is on the lower sprocket when the number one cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke. Any information is greatly appreciated. Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
There are marks and a certain amount of links between the 2. I am assuming you still have the timing cover on... did you use a wedge to hold the chain in place when you pulled the head? Quote Link to comment
Trod8812
No I did not and the timing cover is off Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
Well that's good.... much easier that way.... so there should be 2 bright links that line up to a dot on the crank sprocket and one on the cam sprocket.... Is this the l20b motor? Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
I think the l20b is 44 links.... The l16/l18 say 42 links.. Quote Link to comment
Trod8812
My book says 44 links but 44 links between what? Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
The second doesn't say l20b but they are slightly taller than the l16/l18... Quote Link to comment
Trod8812
So the divot in the crank sprocket should be I’m the 12 o’clock position when the chain is put on but does it need to have the number one cylinder at TDC on the compression stoke, when I do that the divot is not at the 12 o’clock position Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
I can see the dot for the crank in your last pic and the dark link.. Let me see what I can find about the cam shaft mark... Quote Link to comment
Trod8812
Yeah but it’s not at TDC Quote Link to comment

Crashtd420
I'm at work so this may take a minute in between responses.... I'm gonna try looking at my engine assembly pics... Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
Well this is my top timing mark chain... the link is lined up to the #1 Mark on the sprocket.... Are you pics as the motor currently sits...? Quote Link to comment
Trod8812
Yes Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
Well my first though is start back at tdc.... Those 2 links should line up to the marks... Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
I don't know if once you rotate the motor of those links stay lined up.... Either way I would return the motor to tdc and check your cam is in the correct orientation then go from there.... the crank key should be facing up with that dot slightly to the right... Trod8812
This is what it looks like when the number one cylinder is at TDC Quote Link to comment
Trod8812
The dot is not slightly to the right and I’m not sure how to check the cam position Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
Look at the Number 1... the valves should be closed... cam loabs point up and out i believe 12 and 2.. Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
In the pics tou posted with the crank key facing up. That looks right, but on the cam sprocket that looks 1 tooth off... are you set to the #2 position? On my l16 I am on position #1 and you can see it on the link... yours look to be in between... 1 Quote Link to comment
Trod8812
My book says the factory is number 2 and to set to number 3 if there is wear in the chain Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
I thought that was true... L16 are set to #1... Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
So how are your valves positioned? Quote Link to comment
