RW's BSA D1 Bantam(s)

Recommended Posts

As if I dont have enough to keep me interested.

Saw one of these years ago and basically fell in love with the shape and style of the bike.

Both bikes are Birmingham Small Arms (BSA) D1 Bantams.

First one I bought is a 1951 model.  I probably (definitely) spent too much on it, however it was an impulse buy.  Not fully complete but certainly has enough bits to get a good restoration started.

About a month ago a mate of mine rang me and said he knew of a "restored" D1 for sale at not much more than I paid for the first bike.

This one (1952 model) is in MUCH better condition and runs well.  The paintjob is not the "mist green" (see gas tank for reference) that I prefer and the paint job the PO did is not up to my standards.  Still, apart from the speedo cable missing its period correct (paint colour not withstanding) and runs.

Plan is to get it registerd and slowly start work on the repainting and a little tidy up here and there.  Have repainted the number plate holder the black it should be and the next job is to refit it and to reinstall the rear shock absorbers the right way round (PO put them in upside down).

125cc of thumping British fury which should be just fast enough for me :)

My dad rode a BSA motorcycle back in the old country when he was young. He told me BSA stood for Bloody Sore Ass. Mom glared at him and said Reg!!!! I was maybe 10 or so. This love of motor bikes led him to by a BSA bicycle over here that he never rode really and I learned how on it.  It had a twist grip three speed and was the fastest in town where you were doing well with a single speed coaster brake CCM.
