720 Window regulator interchangeable?

Hey yall.  I broke my window regulator on the passenger side of my 84 720 and unfortunately all the pic and pulls in the bay area only have 86 and older nissans right now.  It just started raining this week so I'm a little bummed.  Any idea if the 80 to 85 style and the 86 version window regulator are interchangeable?  thanks!

I would say that build dates of June '79 (beginning of '80 model year) through Oct '85 (about 4 months into the '86 model year) are the same regulator. 

 

The D21 uses a crank that pulls a wire cable and pulley assembly to hoist the glass. Totally different.

I found pieces from two 620 regulators, and one whole 620 pass regulator. The center crank has play in it, but it is still functional. Can also drill out the crank part, and just send crank mechanism vs the whole regulator to save shipping. You can have them for free! just pay the price of shipping. Can get you a discounted rate thru work. I can text pics this am if you pm me your cell #. Or I can email them later today if you pm me your email address. Hope this helps you resolve your water prob. Keep your window taped up in the mean time to keep the elements out.

I would suggest getting the e-bay regulator rather than Seekers kind offer as it will be a simple remove and replace. This is an assembly that is riveted together and does not come apart.

For sure. A direct replacement is always the fastest and easiest when available! Be sure to clean the replacement out with Simple Green, solvent, or Goof Off, blowing out the old grease,until you can’t blow out any old grease, the regreassing them with new grease before installing. Otherwise you’ll end up with the same broken regulator problem before very long, if you simply install the replacement regulator with 30 year old grease.

 

FYI: In a low-budget pinch the circle type rivets can be drilled out, being sure to use the smallest bit possible so the rivet holes don’t get enlarged. The gear parts can then be cleaned with solvent, regreassed, and reassembled with fine thread bolts. But the bolt heads/nuts will first have to ground down very thin, and possibly grind off a corner or two. Loc-tire and vice-grips was used to assemble the gear assembly cover bolts the first time. The second set of regulators reconditioned like this, a hacksaw & a dreamell tool was used to cut a screw driver slot in the head of the bolt for easier tightening, and loc-title, even though there is very little rotational thrust on them. Using a bolt for the crank cover provides more binding material and is stronger than the rivets ever were. The trick is getting the bolt head thin enough, and to sit flat. Both 40 year old pair pairs worked smooth as silk, and are still in service.

Seeker thankyou for the kind offer!  this is matt thanks for the links.  I ended buyin the $24 dollar ebay regulator.  I grinded the rivets off of the original regulator and welded the part the crank arm attaches to directly to the drive gear and then welded the riveted parts back together.  Not a solid fix since the springs don't line up right anymore so i have to prop the window up from the inside but at least its not raining in my truck anymore!  Definitely going to clean out that regulator and re grease it when it arrives.
