FUN FACT --- My two cars have identical spec wheels (15x8 zero offset) but the tire size is 10mm diff on track width (195-50-15 on 510, 205-50-15 on z).  When I can finally afford real Wat's I will go with 15x8 zero on the 510 and 15x8.5 on the Z

On Sunday I finally located the correct plug for the ignition control module but have yet to install it.  In other news I completed my HOOD SHOCK install and it went AWESOME.  I know people use different setups when it comes to these things but I wanted to do it exactly like my white car in years gone by.  I prefer a longer shock that makes it easy to install by drilling through to the inner fender and using nylon spacers along with screws and nylock nuts.

For those that like my setup I run the following:

2 - SG426001 Stabilus shocks (Honda Accord Wagon 94-97 Rear trunk lid support)

2 - 1/4" nylon spacer (for top that uses a 1/4" OD screw)

2 - 1/2" nylon spacer (for bottom that uses a 1/4" OD screw)

2 - 1/4" x 1" stainless steel screw

2 - 1/4" x 1 1/2" stainless steel screw

4 - flat washers

4 - 1/4" nylock nuts

Eric came over on Thursday and we finished the throttle cable, got the car running, and I finally DROVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As always it came with its own set of challenges.  What I thought would be the hardest part turned out to be the simplest.  First thing we did was get the throttle cable installed by cutting off the ends and modifying some linkages I had to accept a set screw.  Additionally we created a bracket for the carburetor side from a piece of scrap steel that Peter gave me.  Once the throttle cable was ran and mounted I installed the factory gas pedal and modified the carpet to fit:

After the throttle cable was done we turned our focus to installing the distributor, firing, and then timing the motor.  Unfortunately the re built distributor was put together 180 out, in addition it did not come with the lower bracket or middle plate.  The lower bracket I had would not allow the distributor to sit where it needed to get the timing right even with modifications to the middle plate.  After messing with different combinations for about an hour Eric asked if Peter was willing to loan us his from his 510 with L20b.  Peter went home and popped his off and came back.  We put it in and the car fired right up.  We spent some time getting the timing right and then ran it for about 15 minutes total and made sure the cam was broken in correctly.  Once that was done Ralph came over and brought some different lower brackets he had.

By 830pm Eric was able to install my distributor with one of Ralphs brackets and an extremely modified middle plate.  It will work for now but I am still planning on getting the right pieces so the distributor can be installed correctly.  First drive was AWESOME and we almost ran out of gas at the top of the hill.  Was able to coast back to my house and get enough gas put in to make it to the gas station.

It drove great and PULLS HARD but there were some minor issues I needed to address.  The rear tires were rubbing the inner fender and I noticed it was leaking a good amount of oil which appears to be coming out of the base of the oil dip stick tube.  The radiator held water and we got it pretty hot.  I still have no gauges, signals, or brake lights, and fuel runs out of the carb funnels after I shut it off but I must say it was SO MUCH FUN for the 10 minutes I drove it LOL

On Friday I forgot to bring my laptop to work (DARN IT!) so I attended two meetings in the AM and decided to go home for the day.  When I got home I pulled the Z out of the garage, arranged to have my fenders rolled a bit and scheduled a wheel alignment in Fairfield in the afternoon (30 min drive).  It was 90 degrees so I put together a roadside kit of tools, duct tipe, wire ties etc.  I also purchased a fire extinguisher and signed up for AAA for the first time (20 years of owning old cars, mostly datsuns with no coverage lol).

I set out and first stopped at the muffler shop to drop off the timing light I borrowed.  Then I headed 15 miles to my friend Pavel's house for some minor (I hoped) fender tweaking:

Before I left I finally installed my rear view mirror and adjusted my fender mirrors (since I have no brake lights...)

At Pavel's house:

So the right rear was rubbing a bunch more when I hit bumps so we had to roll the inside where the patch plate was and grind down the spot welds.  The left side required grinding down just two spot welds and a very minor roll.  After rolling Pavel resealed the inside and painted it black.  He told me to go to the alignment shop and stop by on the way back to check if there was any more rubbing.  After leaving his house I immediately could tell it was much better and couldn't hear or feel ANY rubbing ?

As you can imagine I was quite nervous since the car was technically done and there was some minor risk of ruining Eric's bodywork..........the good news is the rolling was up inside the fender on the inner fender that was still separated from the body by about an inch.

I left Pavel's and it took me about 30 minutes to go 15 miles (I hit Friday traffic on I-80 at 2pm in 90 degree heat).  I got off the freeway and was stuck at stoplights.  Anyways by the time I got to the alignment shop the car was SUPER hot...when I shut it off it pissed some water and then a bunch of fuel was leaking out of the side of the carbs onto the header.  I got my towel out and tried to stuff the velocity stacks and had my fire extinguisher ready.  Thankful to say I had no issues and was very impressed that the radiator actually held water.

One thing I will be doing is adding an overflow tank so water can go out/in as needed.  Before I left the alignment shop the car was cooled down and I was happy that the radiator was still full.  I also think I will try to add a fan shroud since I am running the stock fan (for now).

What is crazy is once I got it on the rack and he dialed it in to the computer he told me it needed NO adjustments.  He didn't even touch it with a wrench!!!!!!!!!!  What he explained to me was that caster should be .5 degrees lower on the left and the toe should total 1/8" or .125.  CHECK OUT MY RESULTS BELOW!!!!!!!!!!!  Mine was .4 degrees lower on the left and .11 total TOE.  I seriously couldn't believe it as I didn't measure ANYTHING when setting it up.  I eyeballed that the wheel was centered on the fender with the TC rods and then pushed out the lower control arms to get enough camber to look even and clear the fenders.  The upper camber plates I had adjusted as far IN as I could without having to cut the top hat out.  And lastly I adjusted Troy's steering rods to get the wheels as straight as I could by eye.

One thing I noticed on the drive over is it felt AMAZING on the freeway so I thought it was close but had no clue nothing would need to be done.

You will notice on the results above that my car is running 5.5 degrees of negative camber all around except the right rear at -5 degrees.  That would explain why my right rear has more clearance issues than the left.  Sadly I have NO adjustment on the rear (not even a slotted cross-member).  The slotted cross-member I had on Wanabre was damaged sadly if you recall.  Anyways I stopped back at Pavels on the way home and there was still some VERY MINOR rubbage on the right rear so he did one more pass with the fender roller and I believe it is good now.  On todays agenda I am going to try and tackle the oil leak at the dip stick tube.  I also noticed the right rear brake appears to be leaking and there is also a minor leak from the cut off speedometer cable on the transmission.  As I drive it more I am sure there will be some needs as I dial it in.

Overall I am THRILLED and can't wait to enjoy it more.  I plan on giving my kids a ride today.  That is all for now ?

So today I decided to start the day with my car in the air again uggghh. I figured out the engine oil leak culprit - a bad sending unit. The entire right side was drenched in oil from driving yesterday so I started with cleaning it all up. After that I started the car with it in the air I noticed a constant drip from the sending unit.  Called the local auto parts store and got a replacement an hour later. Installed it and fired it up again and NO more leak - YES!!!

the trans is still leaking with a very slow drip from the speedometer cable (it's just cut off out of the trans) so I need to order a new one of those. From what I hear the 510 automatic is the right length for a 280zx 5 speed - can someone please confirm???

the leak from the rear brake turned out to be oil from my left rear coilover - think I need a new set soon...

On on to the pics....

After I put it back on the ground I wanted to measure ride height.......I'd call it about 2.5 inches.....need to cut the trans plate though to achieve that lol

Nice job on the build. I got my Falcon i will install in my truck as well. To match the Watts I am putting on my truck. How much you want for the 510. lol

Keep asking........you will be met with silence lol

My very first car was a '69 2 door 510 and over the last 20 years I only lived without a 510 for 6 months (when I bought the hako) and it was the worst 6 months of my life.........lol

This car will likely never be for sale and if it is the ONLY way is if I'm happy in ANOTHER 510 that is IN my possession.

I appreciate your kind words.......it would definitely look AMAZING in your lineup with the wagon and 521.... like the ultimate 546 trifecta

Unfortunately for you it completes MY ultimate RHD trifecta: hako, z, 510

On Saturday I was able to take my first pleasure drive by taking the car out to Berkeley cars and coffee.  It felt so good cruising down the freeway in the early morning.  I met my friend Naveed at the show and afterwards we went out to a local breakfast spot.
