carterb
Lots of progress this week: Tuesday night we drafted an apprentice mechanic to help with the build. He got the bolts "real tight" and helped Sam zip tie the roll bar padding in place as well. Got the rear wiring harness installed and terminated Got the gas tank in and new modern Mazda (?) filler neck installed. Had to shorten the rubber bits a little and modify the flange but now it looks factory. Reminder to get a tranny hole cover plate We are aiming to start up by 2/27 1 Quote Link to comment
carterb
Shifter hole cover, check! Ordered some parts from Z Therapy: 510 flat top carb smog block-off plates, fuel lines, and dual choke cable. Thanks guys! You are awesome! 1 Quote Link to comment
carterb
With start up coming soon - and with the missing carb parts in hand, Friday evening I went through the carbs, cleaned them up, verified everything works smoothly, and set everything to baseline according to the Z Therapy video. Quite a bit of carbon buildup on everything. All parts cleaned Can't adjust idle screws. Phillips head screws are epoxied over (?) If they are not correct, we'll swap them out later. Bowls and floats cleaned, valves checked. One gasket needs to be replaced. The needles were stuck in the pistons so tight I could not remove them without damage. Fortunately I had an extra set of needles. M66? I don't remember exactly and couldn't read the tiny stamp. If I didn't have the extra set, I would have left the old needles in there but I really wanted to make sure they were set to the right protrusion against the nozzles per the video. Ready to set Pretty much everything was sticky when I started, especially the nozzle actuation by the choke linkage. They would stick down every time. Now everything is smooth, pistons fall completely and smoothly (had to eliminate the rubber dome alignment numbs) and we should be ready to go. 3 Quote Link to comment
carterb
Today was going to be suspension day but some key parts are missing so we focused on getting the engine running instead. Sam ran the hard line under the car and finished the fuel tank plumbing with some temporary vent plugs. Since we are going with the JBC rack and pinion setup, we found a major clearance issue with the stock Y-pipe so we installed the header Sam was running on his L20b wagon. This still gives us an interference since the L18 sits a bit lower so I brought a header I had bought from Jeff last year from an LZ24 car just to see if it fit better around the steering shaft. No luck. We'd have to notch the lowest runner. Plus, since it was on a super tall LZ24, it stuck WAY out below the car. I put Sam's header back on and continued with the SU install. We will probably space the motor up for now to get the clearance we need. Carbs installed, choke cables installed, dash pots filled with ATF, ready to go! Jeff joined us and helped finish the temporary wiring to test fire the engine. We primed the float bowls, and... Video at 11... Icehouse
More pictures. Fixture plate. Yeah I'm no Mike Klotz! Making some simple caster plates. Slight adjustments for camber. Watching the pro's sort out the motor issues!! This is called the gas flute. At least that's what Carter calls it :) Shortened the steering column and shaft for clearance for our quick connect steering wheel and more drivers comfort. This steering shaft was out of Sam's wagon. He's going to put our new version of the crossmember so he can run quicker steering for autoX. 2 Quote Link to comment

datsuntech
Smaller tires area thing of the past. 15's are small tires these days. I wish we could get 13's in tread wear 200. I would be a happy guy. https://www.ebay.com/itm/4-NEW-Federal-SS-595-185-60R13-80H-BSW/322151826755?hash=item4b01bec543:g:r84AAOSwuQxaVOJN&vxp=mtr 220 WEAR https://www.ebay.ca/itm/NEW-FEDERAL-SS-595-205-60R13-87H-SS-595-205-60-13-TIRE/292212950869?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649 Quote Link to comment

I chose the 205/60R13 because it is what I was looking for when I found them. Stock diameter...and they look great on my American Racing Vectors I've been running for the last 30 years. They also make some inexpensive 14" but not sure how small i know that they have 185/55R14, but again that is nearly stock diameter on a 510. BTW Federal Tires 205/60R13 are the spec tire for US Legends Race Cars. 205/50R13 is going to be a tough one. Of course full race tires are available AND expensive. 175/50R13 Nankang https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-TIRE-S-175-50R13-72V-BSW-AS-1-NANKANG-175-50-13-1755013-ALL-SEASON-TIRE/121755568193?epid=22017009961&hash=item1c59328841:g:5kkAAMXQQtNR2SPa&vxp=mtr 215/50R13 Vitour also 195/55R13 https://www.ebay.com/itm/VITOUR-Formula-215-50R13-84H-RWL-Quantity-of-4/192251706558?hash=item2cc3183cbe:g:S8UAAOSwbElZbkCu&vxp=mtr Dunlop SP Sport 9000 is available in acceptable sizes, but only available in Europe and Australia. Shimming the motor is the fastest means to the end. Quote Link to comment
volkswagner
A little late with this one but oh well its a cool shot. Jeff deep into his oil pan build. The seat cradle pre-fabbed and mounted to the seat. Large side capture plates to allow us to test fit and find the optimum heigth by jacking the seat up and down with driver in situ. Find the sweet spot and weld in place. Remaining floor filled with steel sheet. Lots of test fitting, head scratching, re-test fitting, tacking, un-tacking, more head scratching, ordering more parts, and test fitting. Finally have the harness attachment [point figured. still some more fab to complete but, straight forward from here. On to something more straight forward. Battery and fire suppression mounting. And some mandatory tow straps. Rear crossmember hard mounts arrived so Carter was able to get the rear end into place and get started on fitting the exhaust. Jeff worked on the thankless job of wirirng. All that work and not even any fun pictures to show it!Starting to look like something. Less than 2 weeks until autoX shake down, 3 weeks to race day... 2 Quote Link to comment
Icehouse
Carter working on the exhaust. watching is helping Testing drivers seat! started on the dash panel. rear fire wall fire suppression mounted. 2 Quote Link to comment
carterb
Like the boys said, I was able to get the rear suspension back on after installing some solid mount bushings. Can't wait to get this car back on the ground! Then it was time to see if the 2 1/2" stainless exhaust Jeff had out back would fit. Let's hope so because we are running low on time and really don't want to have to drop the car off at an exhaust shop for a couple of days... Had to make a few cuts to get it through the crossmember but it looks like we can make it work. Sam and Jeff are really starting to get the cabin together... 3 Quote Link to comment
carterb
More stuff done... Rear firewall deck and rear window installed. Jeff's been working on wiring and dash. Sam's been working on fire system install. Let's hope we never have to test it. Still a lot of items to check and less than 2 weeks 'till shakedown autocross. Someone buy Jeff's other racecar and join us next year! https://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/cto/d/1971-datsun-510-rally-car/6550244287.html 3 Quote Link to comment

Icehouse
More updates. Few lots of spacers and adapters required to make this suspension work. The S12 struts were already shortened when I got them. Of coarse the inserts I had need a spacer. The bump steer spacers need a spacer to fit the steering arm. The camber caster plates we made need some spacers too!! Few It's so close to sitting on the ground. Brakes work but pedal feels spongy. Maybe the brakes will seat and the pedal will feel better after a few laps..... Here are some pics. A lathe would be nice. I make due with what I have though. Love my Sawzal!!! Of coarse the ball joint nut hits the inside. had to do some clearancing. S12 bump steer spacers, I used these on my first rack and pinion conversion years and years ago. Finally using them again!!!! Lot of different parts to make this work. Caster achieved! Built some rear coilovers. Sam getting the exhaust done!!!! 2 Quote Link to comment
