Sam had an exhaust manifold but it was one of the poor flowing siamesed type.  I had a couple in the garage that just needed desmogged and freshening up.

large.5a2de517c01f1_12102017swampthing(0

I started out with 30 minutes in the sand blaster.

large.5a2de51ebb418_12102017swampthing(1

Then cut off the smog manifold

large.5a2de52299793_12102017swampthing(2

The fittings came out surprisingly easy and then I was able to knock the pick-up tubes back through the manifold and out the holes just opened up by removal of the air fittings.  Next step was to block the holes.  In the past, I have filled them with JB Weld and turned in a pipe plug to squeeze it all together.  Jeff said "why don't you just weld it?!"  Hmmm...  Now there's a thought.  I have still yet to weld anything but some scrap steel so this would be a good test.

large.5a2de5264d8b9_12102017swampthing(3

Here you can see the open port

large.5a2de52970f45_12102017swampthing(4

And now, filled with weld.  Just that easy!

large.5a2de52d66207_12102017swampthing(5

The next one gave me lots of trouble as the breaker kept tripping.  What the heck?!  Oh yeah, forgot to unplug the space heater.  Turns out a welder AND space heater on the same 15amp circuit is just a tad too much...

Have a little filling to do around the 2nd hole but otherwise, it came out quite nice.

large.5a2de530d91b2_12102017swampthing(6

Followed by a little high temp header paint.

Next up, de-smog those carbs to match!

Picked up this really nice oversize baking tray at Costco yesterday - just right for carb rebuilds.

large.5a2de53425029_12102017swampthing(7

There is a lot of stuff to get rid of on these.

large.5a2de541ea711_12102017swampthing(1

Does anyone make blanking plates for these?

large.5a2de5439e37a_12102017swampthing(1

Manfifold stripped of garbage and ready for a good cleaning.  Then I'll plug the smog ports in the top.

large.5a2de547a6a9d_12102017swampthing(1

I'll ask Z Therapy if they have something.  I need to get some little fuel lines from them anyway for the carbs to the nozzles.

large.5a2de54b487d1_12102017swampthing(1

large.5a2de54e6fca4_12102017swampthing(1

I'll tear these down and re-set them to baseline before they go back on the motor.  The throttle shafts feel okay.  Not new but not too much play - we should be okay.

Whats a racecar without a fast paint job?
Time allowing we'll be doing a quick bomb can job on the car. We thought it'd be fun to open up suggestions to ratsun community.

Have a paint scheme you've always wanted to see on a 510? Now's the time!
Add some color to this sketch so that we have an easy time comparing and post them up.

Whenever I think that I'm out of my mind for putting this much time and money into an old Datsun, all I have to do is look some of your threads to know that I'm not nearly as whack as you are.

You're going to skin a few knuckles, stand up too fast and bump your head, hunt around the floor for the nuts and bolts you dropped, invent a few new cuss words and when you're finished you'll say "That wasn't so hard after all!"

Before the last Turbo Tuesday, I grabbed a few things off the list from my garage.  The front end components come courtesy of our buddy Keegan.

Just before we got together, we had a little talk and we think we will be changing the racing series we will be entering.  Apparently the races at Monroe are basically full contact.  We are excited to drive but want to do it more than once.  So we are looking at Lucky Dog now.  Jeff and Sam can elaborate.  But basically, we have more time to get ready but also have a lot more leeway on how we build the car...  That meant that Tuesday we did a lot more talking and planning than building but still we got some stuff done.

We were checking seat height vs cage height to see if we can stay legal with the cage currently in the car (it's pretty low, so the seat will need to be basically on the floor)

large.5a45e0c6a2f47_12192017swampthing(1

Jeff found a cam.  It's a warm street cam.  "Better than stock" but not a race cam.  That's fine because the races are 6 hours long so we need a good solid durable motor, not a qualifying grenade.

large.5a45e0c8bd0a0_12192017swampthing(2

The R180 that was in the car was welded.  The R160 we were planning to run is a great gear ratio (4.34?) but now we may go LSD since we don't have to use stock components anymore...

large.5a45e0caa63a9_12192017swampthing(3

Sam ripped off the truck bumpers and Jeff stripped the rest of the garbage off the front end.   Looks like a 510 again!

large.5a45e0cc74308_12192017swampthing(4

Sam popped off the door skin.  We will be removing the "shield" from the cage.

large.5a45e0ce91a9b_12192017swampthing(5

While I was able to get all the rear suspension out from under the back of the car.

large.5a45e0d0b8dac_12192017swampthing(6

A new additional list has been generated...  We've got some more work to do.

Those Delta cams are not per spec. They are maybe stock lift. I micked one out. was like .390-400 lift then minus lash

the champion mine would leak using the Cap it came with. then I put 1/4 Prestone leak stop and went to the stock cap and has neen fine in my 521. needed 14 plactic washers to rest of the core support to fit correctly

hey I got a extra R180 with 510 Haft sshafts . have some money? has low gear ratio

The cam lift is at the valve and there is a valve ratio usually anyways.  Your the L motor guy.  What is the rocker ratio on the L series?

Find out what ratio the diff ratio is.  If its 4.36 or lower (4.44, 4.63 etc) I'll take it!  Otherwise find the original box, pack it up nice and toss it in the river!   I'd give you money but Trump is saving you so much on your taxes you won't need anymore :)

Another Tuesday another group effort.  Sam was out but Paul joined in his place.  Thanks Paul!

After we pulled the motor back out, he and Jeff stripped the few remaining items out of the engine bay and spent the evening stripping the paint.

large.5a4d93ad8b729_01022018turbotuesday

Jeff has a good "after" pic he can share.

I was able to get the steel plate off the drivers side door bars and spent the remainder of the evening stripping and de-rusting them.

large.5a4d93afa33ac_01022018turbotuesday

Oh yeah, and we test fitted the radiator.

Seems so silly that someone would go through the trouble of making something without making it right.  Like Hainz said, spacers will be required.    Dummies...
