carterb
Turkey leg?! Let's hope this one isn't a turkey... The unveiling... S14 SR20DE + 5spd. The recipient All jacked up and no place to go. 1 Quote Link to comment
carterb
A/C and P/S pumps removed Need to break open the package and check the clutch We also need a place to put it, and there is 1/2 an L motor in the way... Problem solved 1 Quote Link to comment
carterb
Good thing we checked the clutch. It was used up! Fortunately, we have "while you wait" service on pressure plate / flywheel resurfacing. Collection of our race season's debris so far. :crying: 2 Quote Link to comment
carterb
Can we actually say the motor is "in" the car at this point? Is Sam sporting a fan belt necklace? Could be a big seller at Canby this year. It's official. The motor is IN!!!! Not bad for an evening's work but we still have a few things to do in the next 4 weeks Jeff says "Nothin' to it but to do it" TM 5 Quote Link to comment

q-tip
I have a fiberglass valance and fenders that I'll probably never get around to finishing out and installing that I will let go for a reasonable price if you guys are interested. Quote Link to comment
carterb
Thanks q-tip. We'll keep that in mind. Before getting together to work on the new motor install, we wanted to know what really happened to the L20b. First interesting find was a broken clutch disk. Maybe this is one of the reasons it started getting difficult to shift? The inner spring and a chunk of the retainer were wedged in the outer perimeter of the cover plate assembly That's not good... The tranny plate had a very curious swirly... Was our brand new rear main seal leaking? The bellhousing was an absolute mess! Oil everywhere. Quote Link to comment
carterb
Next discovery was a broken drive gear on the crank snout and a matching broken distributor drive. Best guess is that the oil pump sucked up some shrapnel and stopped turning. Like right now! Probably *after* the engine let go. 1 Quote Link to comment
carterb
And now the real fun... L20b lost and found. See anything you recognize? Best guess is that one of the nuts backed off the rod cap. This allowed bolt to dislodge and the crank to beat the crap out of the cap and slowly open it up and bend it 'till the other bolt broke. At that point the rod and piston were disconnected from the spinning crank which proceeded to crush the piston like a blender before eventually bending the rod over and shoving it out the side of the block. Good times! Look at the counterweight on that crank! I also found that the oil pickup was missing a bolt. I don't think this led to the issue. I think it was a result of the massive vibration while the crank and rod and piston were wrestling with each other a few inches away. Poor little crank journal. Put your crank rod in, put your crank rod out, put your crank rod in, and you shake it all about... 2 1 Quote Link to comment

hobospyder
Just as a warning, you may want to think about moving the oil filter. It's in a pain in the ass spot under that intake But your intake is different than mine so I could be wrong Quote Link to comment
carterb
Thanks. Looks like we will be using a sandwich adapter so the oil filter will be relocated - but only about 1" (sorry Jeff, about 24mm) Here are some shots from Wednesday. Gas tank pulled and drained and cleaned (again) Shifter hole enlarged and B&M short shifter (not pictured) installed. Accusump installation started: Radiator installed and wiring started Front suspension reinstalled Still a lot to do. Next race is only 4 weeks away? 2 Quote Link to comment
carterb
I was still curious about the L20b failure so I sifted through the oil pan shrapnel collection. I found the missing oil pick-up bolt. It was BROKEN! Judging from the gouge in the side of the tube, the piston rod took a whack at it, snapping the mounting bolt in the process! I also confirmed that the oil pump is seized - likely from solid aluminum induction. 1 Quote Link to comment
carterb
Forgot these from the last race... Roll cage sticker from tech. "PASSED" Jeff had Cathy McCause Fuss (Mrs Lucky Dog) sign the roof. We did a terrible job following her instructions! 3 Quote Link to comment

volkswagner
Installed a Freddy. Shortened driveline installed. Jeff had a great starter chunk for the down pipe. It didn't get us to the ideal location under the car but cleared the steering intermediate shaft nicely :-) Large items left, fuel lines/surge tank and oil lines, throttle cable, and wiring... 2 weeks. 2 Quote Link to comment
carterb
Only took one picture from WOT Wednesday. We all worked hard but seemed to have little to show for our efforts. Here is Sam making the twin pump fuel delivery system: The race is in one week so we needed to step it up a little. We spent this morning together working on the car. Jeff said we need to modify the gas pedal for the throttle cable. I asked what the plan was, he said cut here weld there etc. I looked at both gas pedal set ups and realized it looked like the stock 510 pivot would slip on and replace the pivot from the modern pedal. Sure enough, same diameter, same measurement to the e-clip. I just swapped over the pivot and done! The throttle cable was a little too long though so I made a cable clamp for it to shorten it up - works like a charm! Next step was to cover the shifter hole. The 620 cover is too wide and flat for the 510 but a little work in the vice sorted that right out. The cover was a bit rusty so I painted it with some white Zero Rust. While I had the can out and a wet brush, I decided to take care of something I had intended to do when I first painted the black 71 on the roof. Improve its contrast with the base colors... A little careful masking, a little careful painting: Ta-da! Jeff was being camera shy but spent most of the morning working on wiring. Here he is powering up the fuel pumps. Sam was being camera shy as well but spent the morning finishing the fuel line plumbing. Does this look "race car" enough?! Loaded the sump with oil, turned the "key" and after 2-3 cranks, it fired right up and purred like a kitten! http://datsun510.com/uploads/monthly_2018_05/5b0a12f64b1a5_05262018swampthing.MOV.f1e6d7c850f538110fcb2f867749769a.MOV The list is getting shorter but so is the number of days before the race! 5 Quote Link to comment
