stay away from Hagerty classic car insurance

Recommended Posts

Long rant, but worth the read.

I have had Hagerty since I bought my car. I drive in arizona and use my dime as a semi-daily driver.  Living in AZ, there are a lot of pebbles being kicked up which causes glass breakage.  In the last year I had two windshields replaced and had to get a tow as my alternator belt snapped.

I came to find out that Hagerty is declining my renewal and will be dropping me as a customer due to "too many claims".  I am being punished for:
1. driving my car
2. using their service WHICH I PAY FOR

I called Hagerty and they said I was too high a risk to continue as a customer.  WTF, I used there company to replace windshields broken at no fault of my own. I paid them to cover my vehicle.  I also used their towing service to tow my car at no faultof my own either.  I did not have any accidents or collision claims.

I asked them why I was being penalized for using an insurance that I paid for.  I asked them if they expected all of their customers to not drive their cars because they are "classics".  I asked them if I should just trailer my car to avoid any risk of claims.

I am livid that an insurance company can still be in business if they punish someone for actually using them.

Oh and they also held it against me that my 4runner (insured by State Farm) had a broken glass claim.  WTF.

I highly recommend staying away from Hagerty and if you are with them, question them on their policies.  I will never recommend them to anyone and will be telling anyone who will listen about my experience talking to them, their management and their "Sr. underwriter".

Rant over.

Personally, I'll probably just get a Surety Bond or some type of broadform if I can't get that.   This is the reason --- you can't count on insurance for anything really except liability, theft and maybe, MAYBE some vandalism.  Forget collision, etc.  Some c**t in a Honda yaking on her cellphone slammed into my 93 LS400 the week after I got it, and guess what, the insurance company said "f**k you".  Yeah, f all insurance except bare minimum liability.  Get all the spares you can ahead of time, cheap.

On a related note, maybe you should look into getting Acrylic or Polycarbonate formed windows (don't know about a whindshield).  That's what I'm doing for my 240sx because some punks broke the quarter windows.

A. Sorry. All insurance companies suck balls. They are scum.

B. Hagarty is a very different insurance for a particular customer. They offer realistic valuations of classic vehicles. This way if your car is totaled, you won't get a used car payout valuation. "Your car is really old, here's $1000". Others do that. But for them to do that, they need to limit risk by not insuring commuter vehicles. They insure classics that joyride on the weekend, and attend car shows. Not daily's. This is why I didn't use them either.

I'm also guessing they are not accustomed to calls for windshields. Perhaps that's just me, but I never call insurance for things under a grand because it can fuck up your rates.

I hope I'm not rubbing too much salt, I'm just trying to help the guy shopping for insurance.

If you had regular insurance and had two accidents and a tow in a year your rate would most likely go up too. You expect to pay $300 for insurance but get $1,000 in repairs and not have the insurer increase your rates.

Insure for the minimum and pray you never need it.

Hagerty doesn't insure daily drivers, or semi daily drivers, they insure classic vehicles that are driven to car shows/events and infrequent Sunday/pleasure drives, and the DMV in my state issues collector plates under the same rules as the insurance companies, less than 3000 miles a year which I believe is in the Hagerty rules, car shows/events, and Sunday/pleasure drives, and with Hagerty you also have to show you own a vehicle less than 10 years old(the daily driver), or show you have had a classic daily driver insured with a normal insurance company with regular insurance for several years like I did to have them cover my Roadster, and they check as you found out.

I never use my insurance either, I don't want to be dropped or have the rates go up, Hagerty is cheap, I have 2 classics insured thru them for less than $300.00 a year, I pay way more than that for all my other insurances and I have a lot of insurance policies, I likely fork out $4000.00 a year towards all my insurances(business, home, vehicle, classic vehicle).

It's the first question on the FAQ section of their website:

https://www.hagerty.com/insurance/frequently-asked-questions

What are your usage restrictions/guidelines?

"Simply put, we want you to enjoy your classic vehicle. While there are some restrictions in the policy, you’re covered for pleasure use, whether it's a drive on a gorgeous summer day, a trip to the ice cream shop, attending club events or going to shows. If you have specific questions about usage, especially if you own a newer vehicle (generally 1990 and newer), we're happy to discuss them with you."

I've never even bothered calling them for a quote because I drive my cars back and forth to work.  I assume they would just deny a claim if I ever had to make one.

I have Hagarty, and have 6 cars under them. No claims, but I use their tow service all the time.  Its good for all cars insured in my name, and I have lots of cars that break down :)

Maybe I will be getting a letter soon!

Just bought a cheap 08 TDI and had it towed 300 miles for free.  Just mailed the guy one of my plates :)  Shhh.

Definitely sucks for the op though.  They didnt even offer to raise the rates.  Kinda crazy.

Hagerty does suck, I had paid $240 per year on my classic VW bug and I couldn't drive more than 3k per year and replacement value was 10k so I went to j.c. Taylor paid $130 per year got 6k mileage per year and 16k replacement value

I've heard and seen a lot of people mention there's a 3k mile limit with Hagerty but unless they've changed their policy (or it's a later model car), that's simply incorrect - I checked their site and asked when getting my original policy and adding/removing vehicles. There are restrictions on the type of driving as mentioned and the vehicle must be stored in a garage, but that's really about it.

I've had Haggerty for many years. In a nutshell they require that;

It's stored in a secure place.

It's used only as a pleasure vehicle.

You have another vehicle insured as a daily driver.

They actually questioned me on the last one because I listed my 510 as a daily (insured through Progressive) while I was applying for coverage on my '79 Cutlass. They couldn't fathom someone driving a 45 year old Datsun on a daily basis.

Also, there is no mileage restriction. I could bounce back and forth from coast to coast as long as it was a fun road trip and not for work.

I think 10 years ago there was a mileage limit, or at least a guideline of mileage.  That policy seems to have changed.  Their website clearly states that you can drive it all you want as long as it is for shows, joy etc.  Not work or daily.  Strange to hear a big company paying any mind to one guy with a few tows and windshields but there it is.  Hagarty is for the show car...

They never asked me for mileage nor how many miles I will be driving, I haven't given them my mileage either, so I don't know who you dealt with....
