Hello i have an 85 720 4x4 that im looking to restore and im looking for a tailgate. Ive been looking online for hours and haven't found anything.would any one know where a good place to start would be.

Wrecking yards. Keep eyes open when driving around. Look in back yards for failed projects.

 

 

There are three distinct boxes and tail gates on the 720. '80-'82 are the same and interchange, '83-'84 are the same and '85-'86.5 are the same. '80-'84 tail gates might fit, but the body contour lines won't. '80-'84 have an outside facing lip and a rust prone horizontal seam on the sides. '85-'86.5 are smooth one piece sides with inner liner.

You will find broken ones that latch fine, but require upward pressure to unlatch. All of them are broken so just get a broken one and figure out the special trick to opening it.

I have an 85 and 86 currently and have had many other 720 over the years and Mike is correct you need an 85 86 tailgate.  You might find one on ebay or your local Craigslist.
