Crashtd420
Yup! Sweet I can't wait to check it out something mostly original unlike my beast... sad mine couldn't come but by spring time I'll be ready.... Quote Link to comment

wayno
They all seem to be pointed up like that, very few have it level and I bet they made a very big effort to get it to stay there. All mine point up as I refuse to connect that side bolt to the fender, as if the bumper gets hit it bends the fender also with that bolt connected. Quote Link to comment

I had excellent success with mine by removing the bumper and straightening the two flimsy brackets that bolt to the frame. That's where the problem lies imo. a little tap on the front bumper, and you have a droopy bumper. I, too, was a little concerned about the holes in the valance, but after straightening the brackets, all was well again Quote Link to comment
mainer311
What’s the little vacuum valve thing bolted to the driver’s side inner fender? One line from the top looks like vacuum. The lower line disappears past the manifold, and the middle line passes through the inner fender and goes towards the back of the truck. I’m in the process of looking for vacuum leaks and trying to remove/plug anything that isn’t necessary. Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
I think that's part of the vent system on the gas tank.... Do you have a larger fender in the bed... the drivers side hides a charcoal canister... Quote Link to comment
mainer311
I do have the larger fender well. Do most people remove it? Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
Not sure I never had a bed with that setup intact.. i recently bought a bed to put on mine and wondered why the hell one fender was bigger.... That's how I found it..... Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
If nothing is wrong with it I'd probably leave it alone... right now I just have a small filter on my vent line.... Things like that and the pcv system just keep the gas and oil smells down... 1 Quote Link to comment
mainer311
Japanese car day was another big hit this year. I was the only pickup truck in the whole place. The 521 got a lot of attention. Met crashtd420 there. It was a good time. 1 Quote Link to comment

mainer311
So you won best truck? I had some people tell me they voted for my truck. Another gentleman (not on Ratsun) told me he has two. His primary one is blue and he named it “Smurfette.” They both looked nice. Quote Link to comment

Crashtd420
I think i only took 2 or 3 pics and it was of parts i'm missing on my 521.... I always forget to take pics till it too late.... Quote Link to comment
mainer311
No selfies of the two of you? Not for you, you creep. I didn't take many pics either. I did take some of the actual exhibit that was in the museum, and a few of things I found interesting. There was a lot less old cars there this year. The trust fund Subaru WRX guys all elephant walked in together, and elephant walked out at the same time. It was hilarious. A new Type R. Like a real one, yo. Not sure about the fast and furious shit all over it though. Picture complete with millenial thugs. A new NSX: A DB4. Gorgeous. A 1933 Auburn: A Stanley steamer for good measure: A Jaguar XJ220: A meticulously restored '72 240Z: 1 Quote Link to comment
mainer311
I was tinkering with the truck the other night and noticed an intermittent ticking noise near the coil. I shut the truck off and pulled the wire to find that the center conductor (which was folded over and crimped under the contact) was arcing on the housing of the coil. My thought is that the wires were part of a DIY kit that some previous owner cobbled together and didn't do such a tidy job. So I bought a new set of NGK wires and installed those. I also received my 60A 510 alternator and will be trying to fit that tonight. 1 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
I have had bad luck with the 510 alt 50amp size breaking the smaller L16 issue bolts on my 521s. since 521 use a stamped alt bracket that bolts to the block. also the belt size will be different. I went back to the 35 amper. Rockauto sells a brand new 35amper(WAI) I know its made in China but I have had horrible luck with the Hitachi case 35amper rebuild in Mexico from Autozone and O Rileys.. I dont get a year out of them. One was blowing fuses on startup the other just stopped charging. The new ones from O rileys are Chinese rebuilds and not even a Japan made case. looks chinese case all the way. So maybe the Hitachi Mitshibishi cased one are nearing their end. Not enought stock left to rebuild from. TSI automotive sells nice new Denso Gear Reduction starters also. I plan on getting one soon. Mine dont seem to last more than 2/3 years. Mostly selinoid issues 1 Quote Link to comment
mainer311
I bought a Delco-Remy. The case is a Hitachi. I need to upgrade. I’m doing quad H4’s this winter and need the extra juice. You break the actual bolts going into the block, or the bolts between the alt and bracket? Did you use 10.9 bolts, or some pot metal crap? 1 Quote Link to comment
mainer311
Pretty similar in size. Had to finagle it up through from the bottom and it was a tight squeeze between the block, oil filter, and steering idler. The only mods I had to do were slightly file a radius on the alt case, and take a little material off the bottom of the tensioner. Fits good. Still need to figure out the belt size. Stock belt is a 15348. It just barely doesn’t fit. I was going to try a 15350 or maybe a 15355.This bolt was a little bitch. 1 Quote Link to comment
wayno
The problem with them larger alternators is that when tilted way out like that when the engine shifts the alternator hits the idler arm and eventually it busts the bottom alternator mount bolts, and it will only tilt towards the block a little bit before it hits the upper hose. I believe the 1981 alternator mount off a 720 Z22 lowers the mount location and allows you to tilt the alternator more towards the block getting it away from the idler arm, 1 Quote Link to comment
mainer311
It has plenty of swing. I’m going to fit the tightest belt possible, and it will be fine. The upper stop contact is the lower bolt head on that hose outlet, and the shank of one of the bolts holds the alt case halves together. Doesn’t touch the hose at all. 1 Quote Link to comment

Proving these old timers wrong one 90amp alternator at a time?? Anyways what the gain of a 90amp alt on a stock 521? Quote Link to comment
