Don't they make seat cushions that are wedge shaped(thicker at the bottom. thinner on the top) that would do the same thing?

Yes, I'm actually pretty familiar with adaptive equipment due to a past history of working folks with special needs. A wedge pillow would not really work in my case.

I can reach the pedals now & I can drive it without much trouble at all...despite the springy, broken-down bench seat. Thing is, It's just a little awkward. I'm just a little too close to the steering wheel for my taste.

I'm hoping to just find a way to provide a couple more inches of space between me & the steering wheel. That's all...just a little tweak.

Thinking the suggestion of a smaller steering wheel...along with a minor seat mod might just be the trick.

Thought I'd just throw my idea to trim the frame or stop tab (so it can tilt a little? out there to the masses to see what more experienced ratsuners might suggest.

Thanks for all the input. I really appreciate it.

Personally your idea seems like a good one.... if the only thing stopping the recline is that bracket...
Cut them off, use a couple locking pliers to hold them in position and see how it works.... the nice thing about metal and a welder you can always put it back to the original location...
Does the bench lock in place at all ?
Just wondering I'd it's just that tab that needs to be altered....

I was thinking too, move the tabs up like you said then weld an insert or something into or on top of the round tube ....
Set it up to thread a bolt in and you could create a way to adjust the recline...

Unless you pull the seat all the way forward  you will not be able to recline much because seat hits the back of the cab.  King Cab It!  LOL.

The font is the same, it's just enlarged. I have Multiple Sclerosis & my vision is affected.

Charlie...have you been actually reading this thread?  :poke:

YES! That's what I've been sayin' all along...my seat must be moved up forward (almost all the way, but not totally) in order for me to "safely" reach the pedals!

So, ya, it'd be almost perfect in my case just to have a little tilt from the seat back since I have the room.

My brother Garret shortened Gene's column 3" for him.  My column is shortened 7 inches but it is a 720 column.  I also gave Gene my rag jointed 520 steering box and 720 column that was shortented 5 " by my brother Garret.

i was going to suggest blocks on the pedals too

but you could have custom rubber pedal elevators made       this sounds more professional and cool

or buy some cool 521 platform driving shoes

Smaller steering wheel is likely the best thing to try first, it's only hard to turn when your not or hardly moving, normal driving you will hardly be able to tell a difference in the steering using a smaller wheel.

would not get a smaller steering wheel if you have to tightly parallel park on a regular basis.  I like the idea of sliding the seat a bit forward and adjusting the recline position.  Like someone mentioned, it would be pretty easy to move that tab and install a threaded bumper to make the recline adjustable.

Hey Matt, that was the idea I came up with today. I really think that's an easy fix. Totally reversible too!

I guess I'm late to the party. Sweet truck! That color is the best color for 521's. I am a bit biased tho. lol. I have the engine bay bulb too. just clean the contacts, get a new bulb and it will turn on when you turn on the headlight switch to the parking lights on. not the brightest, but if you're stuck somewhere in the dark it's better than nothing. Great work so far.

If possible get a LED to replace the engine bay light bulb.  Candles are brighter than the stock light bulbs!

Finally got a muffler installed. MUCH BETTER. Installed a Magnaflow XL Turbo & it sounds nice to my old ears...nothing obnoxious.

0PL8aeq.jpg

Also put a bulb in the engine bay socket & it actually works! Not very bright like you'd guess, but pretty freaking cool in my book! Got some projects to start crossing off my priority list...brake adjustment, replace crusty hoses & a few little things but overall pretty good so far.

Punched/drilled out the broken emblem tabs on the driver's side so I can install my new Datsun1600 badge soon.

G42hYTj.jpg

I wasn't in the mood to tackle that stuff just yet so I tried just washing, waxing & buffing Turq out today. Looks decent I guess, but that lovely blue/patina is pretty thirsty. Might take some more to really shine it up & protect it. It'll be a labor of love

yokLkAl.jpg

ufGEAmB.jpg

ZZRjd6a.jpg

After driving it around town a bit, I've made peace with the steering wheel position, transmission shifter feeling pretty loosey goosey & even the seat being barely better than sitting on bare springs. I'm getting to know Turq & so far we are getting along.

To be continued...
