Someone stole the key out of the ignition

Is there some way I can make a replacement key without getting an entire new ignition? I heard a lot of Datsun keys are the same, is that true?

Such a giant bummer. My car isn't even running right now; there's no reason for a person to take it. I just left the key in because I was going to have it towed to a mechanic soon.

Usually, the key code is stamped on the passenger door lock cylinder....provided locks have not been changed.  Did your ignition key also open the doors?  On my 1200 I have a different key for the ignition switch and the doors.

 

If you are really lucky....sometimes the key code is printed on a tag in the glove box.

 

Another thing to consider, who now has your key and once your car is running, will they take it? #commietheifbastards

I guess it's good it wasn't running or it might have been stolen.... they probably took the key or tossed on the ground pissed they couldn't steal it.....

May sound stupid but check the ground or even the bushes or something near by....

And I think your right about other datsun keys working.. I think i used an old Toyota key even when I first got my 521. maybe check with a local locksmith, to see if they can match a key to the ignition....

That's a good point, never thought of that.. might be better to change the locks.... I could see some asshole keeping the keys and waiting to see it running....

Don't take the chance....

Take the loss, fix the problem, keep ypur datsun and move on.....

You could always change the keyed ignition to the push to start system too...

I've heard that about batteries. Thieves will steal your old battery and then wait until you replace it and then come back and steal your new one.

I don't think it will get actually stolen; I live in a pretty low crime area and it's a very noticeable car. My guess is it was like a twelve year old boy who just took it to be shitty. Rather a weird/pathetic thing to do. I guess that's why I didn't think anyone would mess with it.  

 

But, maybe I am pretty naive and really should just get the whole thing rekeyed.

Yeah, I checked the area for it.. no dice I may try to see if a similar key might work

Take the key code to a locksmith.  Locksmiths have the means to determine the correct key blank and with the code they cut a new key.

With the key code (theoretically) you could go to a lock smith and the key code tells them what depth to make the cuts on the key.  Possibly a Nissan dealer could do it, but they would have to have someone there that has been around since the '80s or '90s.

 

I live in a low crime rural area and if i were in this situation, I would rekey and or replace.  Just my $.02 worth.
