Front suspension ‘Yiching‘.

I notice- on both of my 720s, that when I turn sharply to get out of y driveway, the suspension makes a ‘Yich!‘ sound, like the shock is being stretched in a weird way. Old shocks? Ball joints are dry? Any ideas?  It only happens when I turn sharply and the front of the truck meets a small bump, like the transition from driveway to street.

Climb up on the bumper and try to bounce the truck. If it 'squeaks' have someone try to locate it.

 

Grease the ball joints and see... can't hurt if not.

 

Sway bar rubber isolators?

Tension rod rubber bushings?

Upper control arm bushings?

 

Spray liberally with WD-40. Won't cure this but might point out where the sound originates.

I don't have a 720 but assume it's close to the 620 front suspension, not sure what  to call it but theirs a small square bolt on the back side of the backing plate towards the front, by the outer tie rod/s. When you crank your wheels to far in either directions, this square bolt head ( which might/ is adjustable ) rubs up against the lower control arm " wuts you ma call it bracket " on the lower control arm and makes a hell of a screeching sound.  It's not required to grease the square head bolt but a little can't hurt.

The whatchamacallit that 420n620 posted about.....seems to me there was a plastic part that went over the top of that thing. It is like a stopper for the steering system. If I can get to my catalog later I will see what I can find.

Sometimes when balljoint suspensions are cranked to full-lock, they climb a bit. Meaning that the geometry at full-lock is so whacked that turning full-lock actually binds the balljoint and makes the suspension move. Hard to describe. But try greasing the balljoints and crank away. If you still hear the noise, it could be something else, or the balljoints could already be damaged beyond use.

part # for the cap that goes on the "STEERING STOPS!!!" bolt (or the watchamacallit) is 40039-N8200. If it is still available from Nissan I can neither confirm nor deny...you would have to call. This is a plastic cap that prevents metal to metal contact.

 

Curious part about this.....I could only find it in 4WD section.

'78 and '79 disc brake 620 and 720 2wd trucks had the same stopper bolt.

All 720 4wd had stopper bolts but were different than the 2wd and different through the years on the 4x4

Only the '80 720 4wd had the stopper bolt caps.40039-N8200

Okay, well, problem solved- or at least diagnosed! I did everything but get dragged under the truck on my creeper to figure out ‘the Yich‘.  The tip off came when I was backing out of my driveway and heard it again- only this time coming from the back end! I am pretty sure that old shocks are the culprit. They must get racked a little when turning sharply at slow speeds and this makes them complain. Pretty sure that‘s what I was hearing.

Its like how a U-joint binds when you go too far with the angle.  Maybe adjust the steering stops out a little to limit travel?
