Never replace for the 'hell of it'. Only replace if broken or working contrary to it's function or near it's expiry time for replacement. Sure as shit something will break or go wrong. I had a rad in my 510 that had under coating spray on a corner. So a carefully began poking it out with a Popsicle stick. Well to my utter surprise it began leaking. No car for work for two days, Saturday morning spent at wrecking yard getting a $20 replacement.

Fair enough, i just figured since i already have to replace the front of it i would get it all. The front of it got kind of gouged while taking the timing cover off and i didnt want to have to make a section. If its dramatically easier to just insert a section then ill just stick with that..

Well that falls under 'broken'. Sure if you want. The pan will not drop enough to slip a gasket on and the oil pick up tube hangs down too. That cross brace under the pan can be unbolted and removed. This may get you more clearance. Although you can get good results with a patch, replacement is for sure.

Bolt seems loose because the gasket compresses

Understood. Been there. The good news is that Datsuns are fixable if you have time and no money.

For next time...  a Datsun owner should never throw anything away even old broken parts. There is always something you can strip off and use. When in wrecking yards grab fuses, brake and turn light bulbs, nuts, bolts, clips, springs, plugs, washers... from anything you remove. Take some small wrenches and a baggie with you. Often parts will swap between models.

Thats probably wise. Lol. I have/ had a junk drawer of old parts, mainly electrical, and hosing from other repairs, i left parts in the back of my truck for a while "to add weight to the bed" lol. I honestly learned more than anything, to take stuff apart myself so I personally know where it goes- throughout this process. Im going to inspect, and finish the oil pan today probably, just hoping i dont run into more money drains if i do..

I already have an oil pan gasket and rtv (just in case).

Do i need to jack the truck up at all to remove the cross member, or can i just pull it out? Thank you for putting up with my new guy-ness.

I don't believe in stretching but wear causing slack. But this is why the L series have an adjustment for it in the 3 positions of the cam on the sprocket and a tensioner. Only when the 3rd position fails to bring the cam into timing range do you need to replace it.
