d.p
Is this a good deal? Nothing wrong with mine but wondering if it even makes sense to buy it. Local to me and not very often l16's come up at all on the east coast. 1 Quote Link to comment
DanielC
I would do it in a heart beat! 2 Quote Link to comment
racerx
How's the compression...if okay, I would. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Define 'running'. Is it in a vehicle? If not how are you going to compression test it? see if it over heats see if it restarts when hot see if it bogs out under acceleration blows blue smoke has rod knock has huge blow-by 1 Quote Link to comment

You say running? Do you get all the external parts for 200.... Carb intake exhaust etc..... 1 Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
Actually a transmission Too? I missed that part.... Let me ask this why so cheap?.... Cause now 200 for a running motor/trans seem almost to good of a deal..... Unless it's someone doing a motor swap and they just wants it gone... Hell its probably worth the gamble at 200. 1 Quote Link to comment
d.p
Dude wanted 400 for both but not many around here that even know what an L16 is. It came from a 620 and he is putting in a ka24. Engine is already out of the truck so not sure how to test it at all at this point? And running because he says it was before he pulled it lol. 1 Quote Link to comment
wayno
If it doesn't have an eighth inch of dust on it and all the parts are there, and I mean all of them, then it might be a deal. We cannot give 521 4 speeds away in the northwest, someone on here said he put two 4 speeds out in his front yard one day with a free sign on them, and when he woke up the next day there were three of them out there, maybe that was Hainz, but you know I don't recall anyone ever bitching about 4 speed bearings going bad like the 5 speeds. 5 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
That's because it was behind a 60 hp L16  1 Quote Link to comment
xxmass
Hahahaaa DP the Datsun bug got ya !!! It may not be a 16. Do you know what year 620? Is the seller claiming all original? 2 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
'73.............. L16 '74.............. L18 '75-'79........ L20B Check the engine oil. If clean this would be encouraging, dirty... maybe just needs to be changed. Pop the valve cover off. If gray aluminum with oil on it, again, encouraging. If a dark tan or black patina the oil wasn't changed near enough. Pull the plugs, they are a window into what goes on inside the combustion chamber. If a tan color, slightly brown this is encouraging. If black or oily wet black with heavy deposits that would not be good. On the outside, is it 1/2" of caked on dirt/oil? Clean would indicate an owner that cared for his engine. Dirty may just be dirty and yet it could still be a good engine. 1 Quote Link to comment
racerx
That/\ and See if it even turns by hand. There's also ways to run it by constructing a frame or support, Google or YouTube.. 1 Quote Link to comment
d.p
Will go by and take a look at it and see what's doing with it. always had the Datsun 521 bug just took me a long time to find a good one. And like I said I never see l16s this side of the country NEVER and never 20 miles away from me. This is it: https://flic.kr/p/XyfaJA 2 Quote Link to comment
wayno
Since it has the flywheel bolts in the crank I would consider looking at it, people don't normally keep everything together like that if it is scrap. But I do wonder why the flywheel was removed, if doing an engine conversion they likely would have no reason to remove the flywheel, why even remove the transmission unless it was removed for storage purposes, but again why remove the flywheel, I would not have removed it, I would have left the flywheel and clutch cover in place. 1 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
If its a 521 4 speed for the 521 and L16 pay 100$ as its harder on east coast to get datsun stuff. I have 3 trans laying around also. I would get a 521 as a spare. they just a little differnt on the 510 on the output shaft flange set up. yes it was me saying that. about leaving trans in front yard. A guy at work made fun of datsuns and said. Hainz if you sell your car in front yard there will be another there next day with sign that says FREE! I got pissed 3 Quote Link to comment
nl320what
Good deal to offer $200 for both with shifter, engine complete top to bottom as if you could drop it in and drive off.... Good to have a builder on the side while yours is good running so your not fumbling to find it again. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If engine and transmission are together, it wouldn't take much to bring a battery, jumper cables, starter, gas can and hose, a coil and some wire. It may have a starter on it but nothing to hook one up. Stand it up and check it has oil. Wire battery to coil + and coil - to the distributor. Jumper cables to battery + and starter battery - to the block. You could start it and run for half a minute. Won't tell you everything but shows it runs. It might smoke from lying on it's side. If there is rod knock you'll hear it over the open exhaust. 1 Quote Link to comment
racerx
So what happened with this? Quote Link to comment
d.p
Nothing yet, been too lazy to go by and check it out. Soon....maybe. Quote Link to comment
d.p
Picked up the motor today, seller is going to deliver the trans in a couple days. Valve cover looked fine, head looked good from above, it turned over well (turning the crank), plugs were brand new. Just some sludge and rust here and there but it seems to be well taken care of. Its an L16 but some shit different than mine, this one came from a 73 620. Not sure what I am going to do with it, maybe just take it apart and give it a once over and put it on the shelf as a spare for my truck. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
I bet it runs as it is!!!!!!!! no need to take it apart Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
I saw some extra pics.... Ya these motors will run regardless.... but he pulled the head and it's pretty crusty inside. He could probably blow it apart clean the carbon and reassemble and it will run fine.... Still for 200 and everything he got with it, spare parts are always good.... Quote Link to comment
d.p
Yeah too late I already pulled the head off of it. I figure its a long time until I need to replace my current engine so I will use this one to learn and rebuild it. 1 Quote Link to comment
Charlie69
Learning is always good. Quote Link to comment
wayno
From the looks of the head, that engine was a runner. 1 Quote Link to comment
