Dually rear end conversion

I just had to throw it out there the rear end on my 85 720 is shot. I pulled the diff drain plug and pulled metal spaghetti out on the magnet. it was making a awful squeal now that's stopped which make me worry. I have a truck coming this week with a Nissan Dually rear end should I have any hesitation in the swap

There there... take your time and use big boy punctuation with your words so it makes more sense.

 

 

 

Did any oil come out with the 'spaghetti' ???  Low or lack of oil is the usual cause of noise and wear.

Sorry I'll try harder With my punctuation. Yes oil came out with the spaghetti it wasn't low on oil also I refilled The rear end and it still making the noise

The axle will bolt right into your truck, but they were sold as cab/chassis from the factory, so if you ever actually found a set of 720 dually fenders(I have seen photos of a set on a 720 in a Nevada wrecking yard), they would be aftermarket dually fenders.

I used Toyota dually fenders on mine and modified them to fit my 720, it's kinda hard to explain how I modified them,

so I will wait till you have to modify a set before I explain how I did it, it worked really well but took a lot of time.

You have to find some one with a Chevy Luv stepside box, a extended 620 dually conversion, or some other small truck with after market dually fenders, then you have to beg them to sell them to you, they don't come along very often, I will PM you, I have a hardbody set if your interested, but shipping is a bitch.

That's a nicely done truck and shipping would be a bitch I have seen people ship things like that on a bus line instead of fedex or ups I think it's cheaper but it can take forever to get to its destination. Do you have any pictures of where you cut the bed to make the tires fit

If Vancouver had the option of shipping stuff on the bus I would likely give it a shot, but there is no large bus depot here, just small local bus centers, Portland has one, been there, done that, never again.

I only live in montana lol South central part though Seattle is about a 8 to 12 hr drive

Can't you just swap the third member? clean the Crap out of the rear end throw in new wheel bearings and slide the axles back in the rear original housing. The third member comes out as a unit and you don't even need to reset gear lash.

I could but I like the dually idea and from what I have read changing the wheel bearings in the 720 is a pain caused by the break drums

It would be a whole lot easier to do this, but where he lives is not Datsun truck country, he will likely have to drive a long ways or have one shipped in.

I also have lost H190 3rd members before and I never changed out the rear wheel bearings, I just cleaned up the center section and dropped in the next 3rd member/pumpkin, filled it with new gear oil and called it good, never had any of them go bad right away and never lost a wheel bearing ever, and you should see some of the loads I have carried on that truck.

I will say this though, the H190 rear end is better than the C200 rear end, and it is easier to work on than the C200 also.

Another thing that is hard to believe is that the H190 is rated for more weight than the C200 dually axle.

I could get a single wheel axel if I wanted the last time I was out at the scrap yard there were 2 or 3 720s but I actually want to make something more unique than the average 720 king cab

Wheel bearings on the H-190 are not lubricated by the differential oil and are sealed for life and completely separate. If the differential is destroyed this does not automatically mean the wheel bearings are also suspect.

This is a lot of work. You will need to change the entire axle. Only use for this is a camper or carrying heavy loads. Either way, I don't think your box will clear the extra wheels and the brake shoes/bearings are different than the stock H-190 I believe.

This is a complete rolling chassy I'm picking up. fresh tires even on the dually the motor has a bad head from what the guy told me. I don't really care about useful my truck is lowered 3 inches in the back and around 2 in the front. I plan on having one of very few lowered dually mini trucks in the state might be the only one. I also Daily my truck for work as a delivery driver
