Hey Everyone,

I have come here a couple time and you all have been able to solve my problem almost immediately, so, I am here again.

I am a complete novice at engine repair (as a heads up)

I was driving one day out about 40 mph and the truck suddenly lost all power. The alternator is pretty new, replaced about 1.5 years ago. The battery has also been checked and it is good. I had someone tell me that it could either be a spark plug or the fuel pump.

Any other ideas or help on this would be appreciated! If you need pictures, let me know and ill post them on here!

Thanks again everyone!

Check all the ignition coil wires, had that happen to me and was a loose coil connection.

Whenever I think that I'm out of my mind for putting this much time and money into an old Datsun, all I have to do is look some of your threads to know that I'm not nearly as whack as you are.

You're going to skin a few knuckles, stand up too fast and bump your head, hunt around the floor for the nuts and bolts you dropped, invent a few new cuss words and when you're finished you'll say "That wasn't so hard after all!"

Do your headlights work? If not, it is likely the fusible link at the battery.

Seems weird if it was battery related, unless the alt isn't charging as well, if you disconnect the battery while the engine is running it should keep running unless the alt is dead.

Some people also have a misconception of "turning over" what does this mean to you, op? Is the motor cranking and not starting, or does it not do anything when you turn the key?

When that happened to me, I found that the alternator had a short in it, it blew the main +12V line from the alt to the main harness.

If the headlights work, the main harness should have power.

Do your dash lights come on when the key is in the run position?

Have you checked the fuses in the fuse box?

This ^^

Ya, start with the fuses and work your way to the ignition switch, if your alternator had a short you should have blown a fuse or more depending on the severity of the short.

Headlight work, so the battery supposedly has power.  How much power?  Check voltage to see if its 6V, 9V, 12+V.   If you have electronic ignition, the truck WILL die at 10V, but the headlights will still work.

Can you jump the starter with the battery and have it turn over? Sounds like your ignition switch took a crap

Check all the ignition coil wires, had that happen to me and was a loose coil connection.

think you forgot to answer this important question.. This also happen to me and all I did was cleaned the terminals / connectors on the coil.

to check if you got electricity to the coil is take a test light, ground the clip and then test each post on the coil with the ignition switch in the start position. If no juice to 1 or both post, you have narrowed down your problem. Good luck,
