1959 DatMorris

Recommended Posts

Will post pictures when I can but I wanted to start a thread about our 1959 Morris Minor 2door. We have 3 minors, but our 2dr is a driver that has Datsun bits. We currently have a 4speed and clutch from a Datsun but we are actively trying to locate a 5speed and researching a possible complete powertrain from a Datsun.

Ahh Nissan got into bed with Austin Motors in the early '50's to build their cars in Japan from imported parts intending to slowly make them there. This gave them access to British design engines. Eventually they designed theit own but it typical Japanese style, improving on them. The J and A series are the decendents of an Austin design. Indeed the oil pressure sender is still used with a British Pipe Thread. Not sure if the Austin and the Morris were combined by '59 or even if they were but many of the British motor works did. If looking for an A series 5 speed you may have problems as they easily fit the MG cars and have been gobbled up.

I think an L series might open up your options or were you thinking a KA EFI engine?

Yes, so far just looking a 60A/63A and the rivergate kit. The motor is currently a 1275 out of a Sprite. We are exploring all options for Datsun power train swap. This is a "fun" car build as we already have a 1959 4door Minor that is a bare-metal resto. Whats funny is my wife and I have been researching Datsuns so much over the past year eventually both started just wanting a Datsun. She likes 210s and 1200s, I want a Z. We came for the parts, stayed for the cars and community.

Talk about Old English...the frame of the early Datsun Roadsters (60's) looks like it came straight off of some old MG or Singer... with x-bracing, etc.

BTY...I remember back in 1960(I was eight) when my folks came home w/ a brand new Bug-eye Sprite from Richter Motors in South Gat, CA hahaha
