Kaeru
Hey guys, Bottomline questions for those with limited time: Are the reverse gears and the speedo worm drive gear thing in a F4W71B 4-speed interchangeable with a FS5W71B 5-speed? If not, does anyone know where I can get gears, etc for the FS5W71B transmissions? More info for those looking to kill some time: I originally tore into my 5 speed because the speedo worm drive gear was munched. (see photos) Unfortunately, when I got it apart, I realized that reverse is munched too. (I assume reverse got munched and then the little bits of the broken gear floated around and eventually ate the plastic speedo gear.) Once I started researching replacement gears, I was surprised to find limited supplies. In fact, I don’t think anyone (quaife, etc) makes any new gears for the Z Car boxes. Anywho, I’m now wondering about compatibility between all the other Datsun boxes. For example, can I get a relatively inexpensive 4 speed box and pull the reverse gear from it? What other replacement bits are compatible between the various boxes? It appears bearings and seals are available, but I’m not having much luck with other parts. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Even reverse engaged without any drama, so I'm hoping I can salvage it. Thanks, Robert Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
Speedo cogs should be able to be had from Nissan still. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Reverse gear is fine, they all have leading edge wear because they don't have synchronizers and drivers are in a hurry. Obviously it will work and if it does make any sound, just how far do you plan to drive it in reverse anyway??? The plastic drive gear is chewed. Some are metal, probably the early ones. Those are likely all the same and interchange. Quote Link to comment
Kaeru
Thanks very much gents! Good to know about reverse. I'll continue searching for a source of the speedo drive gears then. Quote Link to comment
