MaxChlan
I run Shell Rotella Triple T 10w30 in my Z24, and I have noticed that my local parts stores have stopped carrying it in favor of T4 and T5. I'm due for an oil change soon, so I was wondering if I should make the switch to T5. 1 Quote Link to comment
distributorguy
Its not going to hurt anything to use a more modern oil. T5 is supposed to offer more wear resistance on iron parts, like cylinder walls, oil pump gears, and piston rings 2 Quote Link to comment
Charlie69
I run the Rotella high in zinc oil for rebuild break ins that have new camshafts for 500 miles then I change to a standard ( Non Synthetic) oil for the nect 2,000 miles then I will run a full synthetic oil after that. I make sure and purchase the higher end oil filters that do not drain the oil back into the oil pan when engine is not running. This I beleive helps in longevity because every time you start your engine the oil filter does not have to fill up before lubrication flows to the rest of the engine. 2 Quote Link to comment
MaxChlan
Yeah, I went ahead and ordered two gallons of T5 and two WIX filters off of Amazon. Carquest wanted like $25 a gallon... got it on Amazon for $17. 1 Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
I've taken L series apart that have sat for years and the rod and mains are still covered in oil. I can't see any oil reverse flowing back into the pan through the pump in any serious amount. Why would it? Every oil filter I have ever changed is full of oil. Has anyone in the history of L series not made a mess taking an oil filter off???? If you get a rattle on cold start up it ain't lack of oil. Check your miles, the bearings are just well worn. 1 Quote Link to comment

I drive a Ford F250 with a 7.5 liter (460) and whatever crap filters were being used when I started driving the truck most certainly did allow oil to drain down. When I started driving the truck and doing oil changes myself, the first start valvetrain noise was reduced considerably with a quality filter... 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Maybe more pleats holding the oil back. Maybe better or thicker oil too. 1 Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
Maybe more pleats holding the oil back. Maybe better or thicker oil too. Some filters just have crappy anti-drainback valves/seals. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
L series filters are on their side. No way for all of it to drain back. The mains and rods are down hill of the filter so unlikely oil drains up hill to it. I change the oil and filter and start the engine..... no rod or any other noise while the filter fills up. So if you get noise on your L series when starting it's just worn bearings with lots of clearance or maybe shitty oil. Try a thicker oil. I'm running 15 w 40. 1 Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
As if you can hear anything unusual over the box of rocks that is L series :P 1 Quote Link to comment

Brandon.fair
Is 15w40 good for winters in Ga or should it be changed to a thinner oil? 1 Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
I use out through the winter in my 720 here in northern Utah just fine. 2 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I drove my 710 for a winter for the first time. Dipped below freezing (barely, -5C) and there was snow. Noticed nothing but this is a very low mileage L20B in very good tune.. Quote Link to comment
