I don't understand the excitement over powder coat!  After all it's nothing more than a thin coat of melted plastic.  Bond to the metal is dependent on surface preparation.  If you are going to do a proper clean and de-grease, why not do a proper prime and paint, it will last a lot longer.

Yes, sand, primer then paint.  I only did the exterior as I did not want to ruin the rubber bits on the inside.

This pic is the only one I could find and would have been taken shortly after painting the valve cover and air cleaner. The OE color is a shade or 2 more pale.

 

High temp primer and paint.

1968 VW chrome blue is a very close match to the original color of the Datsun air cleaner housing.

 

Got a link to the paint code or where I can buy this in a rattle can?  L51K?

I have a place in town that makes rattle cans from any paint code.... look for an automotive paint supplier near you....

Worse case text me the paint code and I'll get one made and send it to you if you need.... but you should be able to find a local place....
