willz
I recently picked up 2 KA24e's from s13's this morning for $150. Ones got a spun bearing and the other has a stuck lifter/valve. He also included a brand new felpro gasket kit, arp head bolts, wiring harness and ecu etc etc. planning on putting one of them in my 78' 620, currently has the 4 speed. I've done some reading around the forum and have come to a couple issues and questions. Things I need(?): Oil pan needs to be swapped for a 2wd truck pan for clearance issues, or "custom fit" aka hammer time the s13 pan. Redye's engine mount kit A transmission.... no idea Not sure what clutch or flywheel to use either, I've read some about driveline needed to be whacked down using the s13 transmission? But all I have currently is the stock 4 speed. Have the starters for both motors it looks like most people do the truck motors and so the process is a little different so I'm trying to get a list of all the things I need to complete the swap. 2 Quote Link to comment
Draker
Short 720 2wd tranny will bolt up. Might need to flip that centerlink. 2 Quote Link to comment
Draker
Score on those motors by the way. 2 Quote Link to comment
willz
Good to know! I was worried because I read some stuff about how the starter mounts differently between the cars vs the trucks. So a short 2wd tranny from a 720.... is that found in the standard cab or the extended or longbed models? 1 Quote Link to comment
Draker
I believe it's a standard cab. I'm no expert in that area.. but I own one. Starter mounts a bit different. The 720 tranny is threaded and so is the starter motor. I'm going to drill out the starter holes and just bolt through it to the bell housing. Note, the short 4x4 720 is the same, except no speedo output on the tranny. 1 Quote Link to comment
willz
Aha! I'll probably just drill them out as well. So: Flip center link, 2wd oil pan 720 short trans, drill out mounts for starter (or tap) Redeye's mounts That seems way too easy 2 Quote Link to comment
Draker
Can/am vox for wiring or just do it yourself. Electric fuel pump. Someone with a 620 should chime in. I'm just going from memory of other threads I've read. 1 Quote Link to comment
willz
Ah yes, the can am boxes looked pretty cool. I've been looking at after market fuel pumps, shouldn't be too hard since I'm already running a fuel cell in the rear 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
S13 engine has a crank girdle so doubtful the truck pan will fit it even with a Russian screwdriver. You may have to section the pans and weld together to get the rear sump. You can use your current 720 transmission, S13/D21 trans are both too long. S13 engine is much heavier than the D21 E engine. 2 Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
Then put a Z series front case on the 4 speed or get a KA 5 speed but you'll need to 'adjust the drive shaft length. 3 Quote Link to comment
willz
I'd like to find a 5 speed now, but I'm not having any luck Quote Link to comment
willz
So I'm at: 720 2wd tranny, im not sure of the differences between the models and years if they had different length trans Modify the oil pan Flip center link Engine mount set from redeye And that should be it? Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
720s had two different lengths of transmissions. Long is 31"ish and short is 26.5"ish. Both were available in 2wd trucks. Quote Link to comment
willz
Is there a particular year I should be looking for? Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
The short 2wd are harder to find but i believe they are all before 84, but that's just my experience. And not all pre-84 will be short. DMike might actually have real details on what was available when. It doesn't matter though if you already have to modify your driveline. Just get what's available. 1 Quote Link to comment
willz
I am so lost. I don't even know where to find or what a z case is off of. All my parts knowledge is VW, Audi, Porsche.... this 620 is my first Datsun Quote Link to comment
Lozer
you can mount up your current l style tranny it will work but the shifter will be pointed into your leg. just remember to use the same clutch/ throw out bearing. Grind the pin off the ka crank to mount an l series flywheel. I was running a 280zx 5 speed off my kade for a time and i fabed up a custom passenger side motor mount to clock the engine @ 12 so the trans was only about 15* to the driver side. Not the greatest idea but it works. Quote Link to comment
willz
I'd like to do it the "right" way. Which we all know on ratsun is a very vague term. Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
Z series engine came mostly in 720s. Also came in early 80s 200sx and maybe? one other vehicle. Quote Link to comment
willz
But the short 720 2wd trans is a direct bolt on? 1 Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
So I'm at: 720 2wd tranny, im not sure of the differences between the models and years if they had different length trans Modify the oil pan Flip center link Engine mount set from redeye And that should be it? If you modify the pan you won't need to modify the steering. It's a one or the other thing. Is there a particular year I should be looking for? Any 720 5-speed with the Z series motor that is 31.5" long. Basically every year 720 but a 1980 with the L series. Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
But the short 720 2wd trans is a direct bolt on? Yes, but the 31.5" trans allows you to run the stock 620 drive shaft. Quote Link to comment
