Reverse switch wiring help 71 Datsun 510

Hi I have a 71 Datsun 510. The reverse lights don't work. I located the reverse switch on the transmission. The 2 wires don't go to anything and no wires are near it. I have a Haynes manual but I can't figure out how to properly wire the switch. I would like to wire it the way it's supposed to be, but if I can't pointers on rigging it would help. Either way thanks in advance.

It's a switch doesn't matter which wire goes  to which side, the switch merely connects them.

Have you tried connecting them to see if the reverse lamps come on first? If they don't it's not the switch. Could be burnt out bulbs. Corroded bulb sockets....

Misread.

The two wires you are looking for are Red/Black stripe. Look above the starter. There should be a small harness passing near the dip stick handle and the starter. Probably has the Yellow/Black for the oil pressure sender and the Black/Yellow for the starter solenoid in the bundle.
