Whats the black split ring for on the wheel bearing?

I got these out of a junk yard off a 521 years back knowing I'd eventually need them and I don't remember if they go between the race and seal or between the race and hub. They are the 521 inner nla 32kb02 nsk brand. I've seen them with the rings installed and without. I'm currently changing one and was not going to use the black ring as the one that came out doesn't have one but was just wondering about them.

So where does it go and why?

yep....basically just a spacer so that the seal wasn't installed too far in.  Once the aftermarket started making the seals, the dimensions changed.  You'll find some seals that are pretty wide.....they butt up against the bearing race and are still flush to the end of the hub......the spacer is basically built in.  Others are the width of the stock seals and could/should use the spacer.  Just set the seal flush with the end of the hub and it will be just fine.  The spacer also kept them from being put in crooked. The manual doesn't address them specifically.

....and the factory manual shows how much grease to put in the hub. You don't want to overfill it. Too full and the grease cap can be pushed off when things get hot.  Figure FA9 in the manual.
