Just a post about the tach replacement I did for my '84 720 with the manual transmission in case anyone has gotten tired of not having a working tach and could not find an OE replacement.

Got this eBay tach for like $24 USD to mount somewhere, but after taking it apart it looked like it was small enough to fit into the instrument cluster:

It was just a bit deeper than the OE gage that died years ago:

Just a little bit of plastic cutting to make room for the switch that changes from 4, 6, or 8 cyls and a couple of holes and it screwed right in:

Pulled the OE needle and gage plate off the original one, drilled the little holes to mount it to the new gage front and very carefully made the needle hole a bit bigger with a hot stick pin and presto ! New tach that looks like the OE one:

Best part is that the three wires that are in the harness for the OE tach are the same as what the cheap new tach uses...just have to remove the resistor under the hood on the drivers side and jump across the wires to make it work...if I ever find an OE tach I just have to install and put the resistor back

The response of this cheap tach is a little slow compared to the OE one, but a least now I can see my RPM's again and it looks just like factory !!

Thanks ! Yes it's getting hard to find parts for these around TN...every time I find one listed at the pick a pulls, they have been totally cleaned out of good parts by the time it get to the yard. I think these little trucks run for soooooo long that by they time they make it to the junk yard they are pretty much gone....especially for interior and body parts.

And I learned how to attach a pic to this forum !!! Figuring out how to do that was harder than rebuilding the stock carb on the truck, ha,ha
