C200 axle from a 720 into a 620

Recommended Posts

I picked up a 1978 Datsun 620 16' Sunrader Fiberglass Motor home over the weekend and am beginning my repairs and refreshes.

One weak link is the "faux dually" rear, just a very wide rim with a bead lip in the middle to mount and two tires mounted.

In theory this should help support the additional weight of the camper but in effect causes additional leveraged stress on the bearings causing early failure and breaking the rear axle.

The three solutions as I see it would be to just put a normal width rim on the rear with a nice heavy load range tire $$; upgrade to a full-float true dually rear axle $$$; change nothing and keep the rear bearings serviced religiously $.

As fate would have it, I just ran across a guy selling a C200 Axle with 5.24 gears out of a 1983 720 Dually chassis for $450.

Will this axle be a straight bolt in project or will the spring seats need to be moved?

Any issues with the 620 drive shaft mating up to the C200?

Will the truck even be drivable in the real world with that 5.24 rear end? (I have 4 speed manual transmission)

Thanks in advance for any insight to problem solving this.

There's no service for the rear wheel bearings, they are permanently lubed and sealed, just run what ever rim you like and keep within the weight rating of the 620. The payload is 500Kg or 1,100 pounds. Stock tire was 6:00 X 14" 6 ply sidewall rating.

The C-200 rear axle is wider than the 620. The 720 dual axle Cab/Chassis option came with 4.375 ratio so I don't know what's happening with the 5.24 gears. Someone changed it or they've made a mistake about what it is.

The guy doesn't know what he has,I have never heard of 5.24 gears, that doesn't mean they don't exist, but I never heard of them before.

The Nissan dually axle came with either 4.37 gears or 4.625 gears as far as I know, but 4.11 gears can go in them, any gearing that the late 4X4 Nissan 720 had will fit in this axle as they are both C200 axles, I have used the carrier in a 4X4 rear axle in my dually rear axle without issues.

As far as I know, all 620s came with the H190 axle/rearend, I have a 620 mobile home axle/rearend and leafs, it looks like any other H190 to me but I heard they were different, the leafs are definitely flatter but they have two full length wrap around the bushing leafs in the pack of 4 leafs.

$450.00 is a lot for a Nissan dually axle in my opinion, but I paid $400.00 for the first one I had in the work truck and I have wore 2 of them out, the wrecking yards that have them want a lot for them also.

Diesels were NEVER used on the Cab/Chassis option so this has been built. Axle could be anything.

The C-200 was a Salisbury design with a removable bolt on cover on the back. H-190 and H-233 did not. Ask for a picture.

The H233 was used on the later D21 Hardbody and WD21 Pathfinder. No higher than 4.625

The 620 only used the H-190 in 4.11, 4.375 and 4.625.

I cannot use a dually axle on any of my diesel trucks, the gearing is not usable, I need either 3.50 gears, or better yet the 3.30 gears, my work truck has 4.37 gears in the dually axle, it has an LZ23 in it.

My 720 diesel dually is a cheat, I had adapters made to mount dually axle rims to the H190 rearend/axle I have under that truck.

I just figured out that that diesel truck came to my house a while back to buy some parts from me, that axle had 4.37 gears in it as I lifted the truck axle and checked them, I made the comment to the guy that he was really ringing out that diesel engine turning them gears, I bet he was close to redline on the hiway.

You mean OEM gears. There are plenty of aftermarket ratios higher than that - https://ruggedrocksoffroad.com/nissan-hardbody-ring-pinion-gears-c-482_855.html

OEM is simply one thing to know. If a person is looking to swap gears, stock options aren't the only source. How is limiting your options "more useful"?

Simmer.  Useful to know when you're sourcing used, OEM parts, considering most gearsets in yards are OEM, not swapped aftermarket units...

There was no mention of swapping gears by the OP. His stated '5.24 ratio' is only second hand info supplied by the seller about the truck. The info about the H-190, C-200 and H-233 is much more important than just saying it's got to be after market. From what little info supplied it might not even be a Nissan axle to begin with.

I already told you guys that the gear ratio of that truck is 4.37, I checked it myself, I marked the wheel and driveline and we counted turns of the driveline, I have no idea why he says it has them gears, it likely would not even do 50mph with 5.24 gears relined at 4000rpms, I have no idea why he would say it has them gears as we counted the rotations of the driveline together.

I suppose he could have changed the ring and pinion, but he didn't seem like the type that could do that considering the shape of the truck., and why in the world would he put gears like that in it and make it even harder to drive on the hiway, Sd22 engines need 3.90 gears to be derivable/sensibly derivable unless one puts giant tires on it, he came to my house and bought something from me, but I cannot remember what he bought.
