Angela
Hello fellow Ratsuners. My car insurance with State Farm is set to expire today & I am considering other companies. State Farm is o-k-a-y but the prices keep going up, they are mileage nazis & I'm just not impressed with their customer service over the last 3 or 4 yrs I've been with them. I know a lot goes into rates, coverage, region, etc. but I'd like to hear what anyone has to say about the insurance company that covers their Datsun. I almost got a new policy from Hagerty but once they realized I parked my wagon in the driveway & sometimes under a non-brick & mortar, soft carport construction...it was no dice :poop: I have zero tickets or accidents, 30 yrs driving experience, have a Winter daily driver (2002 Toyota Tacoma) & use the Datsun all Summer when weather is good. Thanks for any input! -Angela Quote Link to comment
Cosmonaut
I love Progressive. After 20 years with Statefarm, I switched over to Progressive 10 years ago, I couldn't be happier. Quote Link to comment
d.p
USAA and they are cool, a little pricey and my only gripe is that they have my truck listed as a 'Datson.' Quote Link to comment

That seems to be a huge issue in whether or not you can get classic car coverage. I cannot garage my wagon...only cover it with a car cover in the driveway basically. Quote Link to comment
ritrebor
I use Costco Car Insurance which is Ameriprise and I highly recommend them. Not sure on what they would value your car. That's the problem with collector cars. I have had 2 claims with them and they went above what I expected. Gave me more than I paid for my truck when it got stolen. They paid me more than I paid for it 7 years ago and I drove 125k miles. I have my collector cars insured thru Hagerty ritrebor 1 Quote Link to comment
Draker
I'll probably look do Hagerty this year. I know not an option for you.. maybe just tell them its in your garage. Quote Link to comment
DanielC
I use Amica. Another problem with "classic car" insurance is limited driving, and I cannot use it as a truck, no hauling loads, or a trailer. Quote Link to comment
Bleach
In all the years that I had Datsuns vandalized or stolen I never could afford coverage that would cover those types of losses. I have had Geico in the past and currently. Any claims were handled well but were all on more modern cars. Geico was very pointed about the fact that "they do not insure modified cars" If you have your car lowered or modified in any way, be careful if a claim comes through. Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
I have Geico, but haven't made any claims, so really I can only comment on price being decent. Quote Link to comment
KoHeartsGPA
All State has been good to me, but have Hagerty on my dime. Quote Link to comment

Does it have to be classic car coverage? I ran into the same problem when I tried to cover mine on USAA online, their tool pushed me to some 3rd party classic car insurer who wouldn't insure my truck for some asinine reasons. In the end I called USAA and they insured at as regular old truck. Quote Link to comment
Ranman72
I had alstate for over 25 years but the started messing with my home insurance and wanting inspections every 2 years so now i have AAA on all modern cars and my roadster but haggerty on the classics haggerty agreed value and mileage and has to be in a garage I was happier with allstate than AAA but the homeowners problems forced the move 1 Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
I know it's different for different states but in Mass if i were to insure my 521 as a classic I am told it can only be driven on sundays or to and from a repair shop or show.. not sure how much cops care about that but I have zero luck so I am just putting it on the road with normal insurance... and I use Hanover.... hitch
I insured my 93 MR2 and my Datsuns through Hagarty. I told them that I would like to tow a small trailer with the D21 occasionally and they were ok with that. Quote Link to comment
Angela
I appreciate all the responses here. Thanks. My main reason tor exploring classic car coverage is the "agreed value" benefit. "spare parts" coverage, & guarantees for parts specialists to find parts to make the car right again after a claim. I don't have such offers with State Farm. I'm also afraid that if some yay-hoo runs into me or something happens to my wagon, it'll just get "totaled" & won't be worth their time to deal with. From the sound of things, the options are somewhat limited. I think with traditional insurers you'd have to have the car officially appraised in order to get better coverage/protections. Anyone ever gone that route? Seems like valuation guides only cover the sedans. I've not found much for wagons. Thanks again, Angela Quote Link to comment
Draker
My current car insurance won't insure on their classic car plan, because it's not all one color. They consider it to be, not restored. I was pissed. 1 Quote Link to comment

Anybody out there use one of those "General Steel" building kits? If so, does your insurance accept that as being properly garaged? Quote Link to comment
Duncan
FWIW, I use Hagerty Insurance for my wagon. The "wagon" part of it was never an issue. They did ask me if it was garaged, and I told them yes. I've never had to prove it, but it is kept inside. I currently have it insured at an agreed value, and non-operational since I took it off the road to restore it. I'm a bit under-insured on it at the moment, but it costs me $100 per year. When i was driving it, the cost was about $200 a year. Once it's drivable again, I plan on submitting new pictures and increasing the insurance substantially. I suspect it will be around $250-$300 per year with an annual mileage limit. As I recall, it was around 5,000 or so. So, do you have all of these vehicles "garaged" to meet Hagerty's requirements? 125 CSL
Shelter Insurance. The only claim I have had is on the M roadster I hydroplaned off the freeway. It was a salvage title, but the company paid what I had paid for the car, even though I had been driving it for over a year. Have not asked about a classic car plan. Insurance on my daily driver VW Golf seem a little higher then others locally in the same class car. Use to be able to make one payment a year, but a few years ago it was changed to every 6 months.
