Turn Signal/Flasher Shuts Off Headlights 73 240Z

Here's one for the electrical experts...when I use my left turn signal it completely shuts off my headlights.  When this happens, if I switch the headlights to the parking light or off positions the headlights turn back on.  I've noticed the when if I use the right turn signal the headlights will come back on.  I also have to lift up harder in order for my right turn signal to work.

 

At first I thought the headlight relays were bad but I diagnosed this last night after a drive.  Electrical is not my strong suit so any help would be appreciated!

 

A little background on the car: 1973 240Z with an L28 5 speed from a 280Z, the PO installed headlight relays on the vehicle.

Might be worth taking a look at the turn signal switch itself. Does the 240z have the high beam switcher on the turn signal switch?

 

When did it start happening? Any recent changes to the car?

when he installed the relays ,Is it a H4 harnnes type set up. (prefab) or soemthing the prev owner made up (lots of loose wires)

 

If a harnees. then just disconnecte it and hook back up to stock and see what happens.

If what he made then Your on your own.

 

 

I would just disconnect the lamps and try again and see what happens with the signals.

 

the lamp circut should be separate from the other stuff.

I purchased the car two months ago and the problem only happened after I took possession of the vehicle.  The relays don't look to be prefab.

so it means you bought it that way?

 

If it has a harness I assume it has the H4 hamp bulbs. and housing. What brand is it. Hella Bosch. Cibie????

 

I would disconnect the 3 prong connector and tell us then whats it doing

The switch for signals and the headlamps are on the same stalk.... I would start there.
