If the tank has no holes in it right now, put a chain or lead fishing weights in it and shake it around for a long time to knock all the rust flakes off, then empty it out and blow it out with air, you have to take the sender out.

Then buy a good quality tank liner and follow the directions, make sure that the fuel pickup tube doesn't get plugged with the liner material before it dries, I blow air from my air compressor thru the pickup tube a bunch of times to make sure it stays clear.

That would pretty much renew the tank.

On my car, I removed the sender and poured a double handful of driveway gravel in an shook it and rolled it around for 15 min. Emptied it out and rinsed with water till clear. Let sit in the sun for the afternoon to dry and replaced it. Before this I could drive only 20 or 30 miles before the fuel filter was clogged. Keeping the tank full reduces sweating inside and changing the fuel filter every year isn't a big expense.

And after cleaning, put old speaker magnet on bottom of tank(outside tank). Anything u missed or gets in later is kept contained. To me coating tank is just something else to clog shit up. Once u get current rust out,not much rusting well happen. Given u drive regularly.

If its real bad check out radiator shops... some also recondition gas tanks... if your gonna bother with any type of coating it all about the prep to make it stick correctly... I personally don't like the do it yourself self coatings either but the radiator shop did a great job.... acid tanked and coated for about 250...
