"DatLo" Ko's 620 KC build

Recommended Posts

This will be my second datto build, first on Ratsun forums....

77 KC with half L20b with valve marks on the pistons and a 4spd, drums all around, used to be a convertible....Or chopped roof project of some sort.....Done by 17 year olds that later decided it was more than they bargained for....So.....They slapped the roof back on and did a shitty job welding and tried to cover up their mess with bondo......lots and lots of it.....Other than that, she's in good shape, floorboards are solid and in one piece, a little bit of rust on passenger side but superficial, some rust on the exterior of the cab in rocker panels and some below the battery tray, nothing that can't be fixed, oh and the bed....Awesome shape, perfectly straight, hardly has any rust and is superficial, floor still has most of its original paint.

Truck is super low, so low you can't roll a soda can across from door to door LOL.

Direction of build:

-KA24 Carbureted 38/38 Weber.

-5 SPD.

-720 front discs.

-Discs on rear (if budget allows) or rebuild the stock drum setup.

-3.70 or 3.88 rear diff, also have access to 411. (Nothing in there now, it's empty) the wheels on there are 13s spokes rims that I want to keep so when the time comes I'll do the math to see what will work good with the KA 5spd.

Enough of that, here's the pics....

OK so last weekend I pulled all the glass and pretty much it since I was at Al's shop (where I'll be doing all the work due to my very limited space 1 car garage home currently being occupied by my 510) for few hours.

With Al's, Cesar and Tom's help with pulled the Cab off the chassis and placed it on stands so that I can do all the metal work...

I got a chance to grind off most of the bondo on the roof today so I know exactly what I'm dealing with....Nasty...Lol, hopefully next weekend since I have to go back to work tomorrow, I'll be able to start undoing that mess and re-do it properly, can't wait!

Well, since I broke down yesterday on my way to Tacoma to deliver my load and got towed back to Eugene, got home 3am and didn't get much sleep, mainly tossing and turning stressed out about my truck breaking down, went to the shop where it's at and after that decided to blow some steam and put more work on my 620......

Took this pic before leaving the house...Grille is in good shape

Went to do some grinding on that messy roof, don't have an after pic of top part, but this is what it looked like....

Then I aligned the roof and started the long process of weld, fill, grind......Filll, grind, fill, grind.....Forgot the before pic, but the gap you see up top was the same clear to bottom of the roof...

More welding filling and grinding...

IMG_20170306_152029.jpg

And more....

Getting there....

Hopefully tomorrow I'll finish that section and go to the driver side and repeat the process before spot welding across the roof top, Al was a huge help making sure things lined up properly, more updates tomorrow, hopefully

Im dealing with the same thing. I had a bit of warpage with the tacks i did using an arcweld welder. Just got a mig so should see some improvement. I will be taking care of business mid april.

Did more metal work today, finished off the passenger side and started on the driver side.....

This is how badly aligned it was

Had to grind off all the welding, aligned it using a jack with a piece of wood, tac, tac, tac in several spots, then build on welds.....

Continue welding and grinding....

Tomorrow I'll finish that section and start cleaning up the remaining welds across the roof and begin tap welding across the roof :)

Looks like you could use a flapper sanding disk after you grind those welds back. Also the welds look a little on the cold side. Probably easier to weld sheet metal without blasting through, but more build up as a consequence. Either way, that roof is looking wayyyyyyy better! Has a nice round shape to it also.

Yeah, I'll turn it a bit higher, Tom brought a flapper, haven't used it yet, been concentrating on building up material on the ugly spots for strength.

If it's working for you, I'd go with your settings. Just an observation is all. You do have to bridge some gaps.. so it might be better to do what you are doing really..

Flap disks work great!

Flap wheels changed everything for me. They stepped up the finish quality of my welds exponentially. My fabbed parts suddenly started looking semi-professional quality.
