521 constantly blowing flasher, reverse and meter fuse

That picture Mike posted is my picture.

I bought new 1/4-28 1/2" grade 8 bolts and lock washers.  Cleaned that entire area as well as the ground wire and then installed everything as it was in that picture (bolt, lock washer, ground ear, VR, fender) w/anti seize.

Too cold to fuck with it anymore today but will be back at it soon.

You have a stock Hitachi VR on there. just wait for the alternator to show up. I think we overthought this and its a simple fix. ( I HOPE!!!!!!!!!!!)

Mine issue seems fixed.   When it overvolted it popped my solid state VR. I installes Bosch Labol Made in Japan mechanical unit which look like a stock VR. Fuse still popped when I reved it up but the VR seems fine evertime I changed the fuse. So they are more robust a VR since it just mechanical relays.

Replaced with a stock 35amper and it seems good now.

If a ground issue not hard to get a wire from frame to - side battery

Be honest the drawing on here was a little better as the Haynes manual ,don't show the fuse block hookup.WTF.

Just for shits and grins. I have liefetime warrentee Alt from O Rileys and Autozone.

I what I had in there was a Mexican rebuild Alt.  Pulled it  and put the Vatozone Alt in its good for now.

Take the O Riley alt back now they replace it with a Chinese rebuild!!!!!!!!!!!!  They are reaching new lows!!!!!!!!  Look Like a Mitshibitshi unit or a Nippndeso but they is no orginal marking on there and wonder if its  just a Chinese clone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

get the INNOVA!!!!!! or similar to plug in cig lighter. to monitor your voltages.

Yeah I hope so too because I tested and disconnected everything off that fuse (and then some) and it still blew.  I also added a ground from the battery to the firewall and it blew so I don't think its a ground issue.  Only two things left are the VR and alt, I ordered both (prostart alt from pep boys and VR from rockauto) and will test one ta time. Ordered one of those cigarette volt meters as well....you just unplug it when you turn your car off (cig lighter hot all time?)??

I leave mine plugged in.  It dont draw in the battery  less than a clock. Should have ordered 2.. My 1st one broke apart.

theres different versions by different manufactures but you get the jist.

just for added info.

the green wire from the fuse box. I disconnected it and put a ohm meter. and it was shorted to ground. then I disconnected the VR then it was OPEN so I figured the green wire was good.

the green wire from fuse box goes to the wht/blu stripe wire to the VR

I see it now:

Not sure I follow exactly how to test it.  Disconnect green wire at fuse box, put a probe on the green wire (fuse box where green wire was connected) and the white/blue at the VR?  Do this with VR connected and disconnected?

take Green wire off fuse box.  see if it shorts to ground with Ohm meter. Its should ground out.

tejn disconnect the fuse box and measure again to ground and the meter should be OPEN.

green wire and the wht/blu should be shorted.(Connector where the VR was plugged in)

we are up to 5 pages now so best just to wait for the Alternaor to come in ans see what happens

Update: Got the new VR today and had the brushes replaced in my current alt while I was waiting for the new one to show.  Current alt tested out fine on the bench but when I threw the new VR on it still blew the fuse.

Re-manufactured alt showed up this afternoon so I threw that on and was able to rev it up without blowing the fuse.  For shits and giggles I put the original VR back on with the new alt and saw 16+ V under load.  Thought that was too high so I switched back to the new VR (made in the USA) and called it a day.

And I noticed I had a blown tail light, anyone now what size bulbs they are?

Did your charging voltage go back to normal with new VR and new alt?

just remember that use the cig light volt monitor  TRUST IT!!!!!!!. That volt reg you bought is the USA made unit they don't last to long. I got only like a 1.5 years then it would overvolt to 16volts.

drive it around with accessiories on and learn hoe it works and the voltage it prodices at different load setting so youll know when something act up. Since you have 521 most are 35amp alt and at idle thy can read low.(if you have H4 lights and say heater on)

You can try amazon but saw on one website they list one for $$70 which is outragous!

OI got mnie years ago when they were cheap and bought a few of them.  I like the Autozone solidstate ones but if you dont ground them good when putting your alt in they can pop.  I got them for under 30 but not as robust if a overvolt condition as we just had as I poped one during out trouble shooting. So I put the Jap mechanical in. seems fine now but bought a new solid state one also
