Scgreen620
So got news from the machine shop ... He said the compression is fine it's all 150 to 135 ish.. So the conclusion was that there's nothing wrong with the engine My question is does compression tell whether the timing chain is loose? Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
Wait. Did you remove your engine to diagnose an unknown noise? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Engines make noises, they all do. The majority mean nothing to most people familiar with their engine or a particular series of engines. The first time I pulled into Canby in the dark someone said 'is that an L series I hear?' Now that said, it is possible that what you are hearing is completely benign? Quote Link to comment
scooter
L's are rattle traps on a good day. Thrust bearing? Quote Link to comment
Scgreen620
Wait. Did you remove your engine to diagnose an unknown noise? No did not remove the engine ... Quote Link to comment
Scgreen620
I think I found the problem tho I checked the alternator once again and noticed that the alternator bolts from the bottom of the alternator were loose... Tightened them no more noise ....fuck (slaps forehead) what I'll do is take it to autozone and get a new one just say the bearing is fucked or something Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
Then why was it at a machine shop rather than being taken somewhere that can actually diagnose your noise. Again...A harbor freight stethoscope is cheap and probably one of the best diag tools anybody could own. Quote Link to comment
Scgreen620
Because they built my engine and figured they would be able to diagnose Will look it to the stethoscope .. I was taught that my first year of mechanic class lol Quote Link to comment
Scgreen620
And here in Cali there isn't places that I know of that focus on datsuns .. Most people say it's too old to work on or some bullshit exuse Quote Link to comment
Cheetahking
So - I have to ask - Did you ever take off the fan belt as was suggested in the first few posts? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I did say it would be something simple and it was, a cheap fix. All is well, that ends well. Quote Link to comment
