five1oh
My name is Andrew and I'm a Datsaholic. For those that know me I enjoy telling stories. Sorry if I bore some of you but here I go: I joined Ratsun in 2009 and have mostly been a lurker, the past year or so I have found myself logging in a couple times a week and recently it has become an everyday occurrence. I used to come here to get info, use the old classifieds which were awesome, or check up on projects. I love reading the build threads and I feel it is my time to contribute. I have another thread that I will start later on and thought I would give it a go with this one first to learn and see how it goes. When I was 15 way back in 1997 I saw my first silhouette of a 510 looking through a newspaper at car ads while at my grandmas up in Portland. I cut it out and carried it in my wallet not knowing what it was but knew I had to have one. I looked for the better part of a year, got my license on my 16th birthday and a couple months later found a white 69 2 door in walnut creek. I begged my dad yo look at it with me which he obliged. We went over there on a rainy Saturday in January 1998. The car was lowered, had two red spoke libra 13x7's in the rear and stock steelies in the front. It had door panels and a $60 summit racing drivers seat and a stock passenger seat, no back seat. It was loud and I loved it (stock L16 with stock carb and a dogleg 5 spd). After we left I begged my dad to buy it and he made me sleep on it. The next day I told him I still wanted it and he agreed to call Monday night after work. We made the call and the car was sold - I was heartbroken. A few days later my dad got a call from the seller saying the buyers check bounced and it was available again. I talked my dad into buying it and we picked it up that weekend for $2,200. Over the course of the next couple months I found myself spending a lot of time working on it and learning because the brakes went out, the rear springs were cut pieces and blocks of wood, the drivers seat broke free, etc etc, guess we figured out why the check bounced lol. I still loved it and slowly fixed it up through high school. It took me over a year to pay my dad back (with interest lol) because of all the problems. By the time I graduated high school I had two 510's and was addicted to UFO publications, dime quarterly etc. sadly I never made it to Shasta before it shut down, I've also never been to Canby - signed up one year but got swine flu Some of my previous cars: 99% sure I bought the black wagon from Phil (twistedimages) back when he was at FBI in Sac. From the time I was 16 until now I have owned well over 60 cars with the majority being Datsuns. The one constant I had until August 2015 was that I ALWAYS owned at least one 510. I sold my last one to finally fund my dream car and have been missing it ever since which brings me to now. Of all the 510's I have owned this car is the cheapest I have ever got one for - go figure. 6 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
Story on this one is I happened to be called home to pick up my son from daycare because he was sick (runny nose lol). When I got there he was fine but I took him anyway. Got caught up on work at home and did the usual "Datsun" search on craigslist - you know the one. Found this car and recognized it as the one from around the corner from my house. Texted once, texted again letting him know I was around the corner, called left message, called left message again that I'm going over to his house, drove to the house knocked on the door, bugged a young girl that lived there, told her to text him, text him again saying I saw the car and interested, called and left voicemail begging him to call me back - SUCCESS he called back, discussed a price, told him I could tow it home today, texted again thanking him, called again to let me bring him cash now, SUCCESS paid the girl living there, towed car to my house after work, got a picture of title and reg!, drove to SF next day to pick it up, met him at the house listed on the title from 2007!!!!! Same name owner, current reg are you kidding! This doesn't happen! So it's a little rough but here it is: Good - L20b with dual mikunis, 5 speed (dogleg), complete interior, perfect dash pad, coilovers all around, panasports, solid floors Bad - rust, stereo, crap ton of wires - you will see, hasn't run in a year although I'm optimistic Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Super sweet stereo: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 3 Quote Link to comment

Draker
Cool car! Might have a bit of a rust issue.. but I'm sure you can get it straightened out. Keeper is about an hour or two away from you.. so you should be good for spare panels. Quote Link to comment
five1oh
So right after I got the car to my house 12/28 I flew up to Seattle the next day with my family for vacation. I came back to the Bay Area the following week and it had been pouring for a long time. The first time I really got a look at the car was a couple weeks after I bought it. Time to clean the engine compartment in the pouring rain! five1oh
Unnecessary wire removal time. This car had overkill, full built stereo with custom boxes, tons of super thick gauge wire, etc. it also had a car alarm that had a trunk pop sensor, electric door lock actuators, RF key module, cutoff switch for starting, siren and hood pop sensor - crazy - not to mention the wires from the ignition were stripped (not cut) with new wire wrapped around them with electrical tape to tap power.... five1oh
Today was a good day. Scored some perfect fenders to go with that hood and got a SUPER nice grill....best part of the day though was meeting another Datsun head, spent over an hour sharing stories. Good times, can't wait to get them on the car. Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 3 Quote Link to comment

five1oh
Started digging through some old stuff looking for some pics of my first 510. Found a bunch of goodies including almost all UFO publications, all dime quarterly publications, all 510 again publications, special Datsun only classified mailers from the early 90's, how to modify your 510 book, a 69 510 owners manual, a 70's? 510 owners manual, a 620 warranty card, and some great old clippings of cars I used to carry in my wallet in high school. five1oh
One thing I totally forgot to mention is Troy Ermish is the man! I met him in early 1998 when I started having issues with my first car. I will never forget how naive and young I was when I called him the first time. I live in Benicia and I called him on a Saturday in early spring 1998 and asked if I could drive down. He told me sure and just take 680 south and get off Durham road....so I load up two buddies and head out. 30 minutes later I'm like where the heck is Durham road??? Pull off the freeway in San Ramon and call him from a payphone 510-252-1001 (still engrained in my brain) and he's like yah I'm in Fremont - it's 50 miles south of you! Anyways arrive there and just talk with him and look around for hours it was like candy land. I have probably purchased everything you could ever purchase from him and he always treated me right...from brakes to coilovers to engine to exhaust to full roll cage to fuel cell to multiple transmissions, rear end, slotted cross member etc etc. below is a pic of a pottery thing I did in high school of his logo along with a pic of my first car after $600 paint job, that is the way it was when I sold it for $3k. I drove that car up to Portland many times and even to tri-cities Washington with my mom, brother, and luggage loaded up Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 3 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
Last week I took a day off work and decided to try to get the 510 running. I had been putting it off for long enough and part of me was excited while the other part was nervous it would need a ton of work. After charging the battery that came with it for a few weeks I decided to hook it up along with my booster hoping it would start. Turned the key and heard the starter click but the engine didn't turn over. I was a little disappointed but thought I would get a new battery to see if I had issues with the cranking amps. Hooked up the new battery and put fuel in the top of the carbs. It cranked and fired right up!! Then I decided I was going to remove the new (looking) fuel line to crank through the bad gas. When it turned out to be rock hard and not wanting to go back to the auto parts store without knowing the extent of the motor I decided to keep adding gas directly to carbs. After putting a bunch of new gas in the practically empty tank and applying gas directly to the carbs 4 times it started idling and running perfect. I let it run for about 10-15 min with no issues. https://flic.kr/p/RhUg5G https://flic.kr/p/SvQZj5 I then went to try and drive it but had no clutch pressure. The master and slave looked like they'd seen better days. The next day I drove out to Troy Ermish shop and picked up new ones. This past weekend I installed them, bled them, and then bled my front brakes and decided to take it for a spin, I didn't have any rear brakes because the drums were seized so I took them off. My new 280zx rear disc brake brackets, calipers, discs, etc. should be here by early next week. https://flic.kr/p/RhTyRW https://flic.kr/p/SkFFVw 1 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
So first drive was in town over to my friends house, it was so awesome even though every time I hit the gas my seat practically broke. Once I got to his house I noticed the car was leaking radiator fluid. The lower hose was shot so I got a new one. In addition my friend has a welder so we decided to repair my seat. It's better but not great....I will need to find a new seat eventually but right now it will hold up. five1oh
I have been thinking about what to do with the the car in terms of paint for a while. I have pretty much settled on cactus green but currently this project is on the back burner because I have another project car taking priority. Once I start tackling rust and what not it will start transforming that direction but since it was already halfway to "bre" I thought I might as well go full "bre" until I can spend money on body and paint. This car is now called "wanabre". I went to one of my shelves and I literally had blue, white, and black spray paint that was purchased back in 2000 when I was painting a lawn mower and my white roll cage for the blue 510 I had. I thought what the heck, the car is a rust bucket and I can't make it much worse so.....as soon as I got back home I bought a can of red (that matches ridiculously well) and busted out the masking tape: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 2 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
Today I was able to finish the window frames black, white roof, and sand down some of the overspray. I also decided to do a quick polish on the paint to get rid of some rust stains and hoped to brighten up the red. Turned out pretty good in my opinion: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Next step is to fix the brakes and get it lower to the ground. Also planning on getting rid of the underbody surface rust as well as the floors and get them sealed up. Once that's done I can put my interior back in. 4 Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
The black frames and bre stripes really helped the look of the car. Nicely done. 1 Quote Link to comment
