240Z tire availability by size

Recommended Posts

While I'm working on my Z, I'm looking into what wheels I want. What's on it isn't bad (15x7 Shelby Minilites) but not really to my taste.

That said, the new Work Equip 040's look amazing, but are only in 15" (at least for now). My second pick would be a set of 16" Work Meister CR-01's.

A key factor in my decision at this point is the availability of tires in each size, hence the subject. From my research it seems that 15's in an appropriate size (205/60r15, 225/50r15) are either touring all seasons, track only tires, or classic reproductions that will do what I want but cost $300 each (Pirelli). If I go 16's I see a world of tires open up due to the appropriate sizes being used on air cooled Porsche's (through the 993) and BMW 3's (through the E46). Going to 17's gets even more selection, but I don't like the look on a Z. I'm not really looking to go above a 225/245 front/rear, and I haven't decided on staggered or square yet.

Am I missing something, or is this the situation at this time?

One thing you must keep in mind is the over all tire height or diameter.

195/70R14 seems to be the largest stock tire for the 240z and that will be 24.75" and about 7.7"wide. For example going to a 26" diameter would be the same as reducing your differential ratio from 3.364 to 3.2 and cutting acceleration and performance not to mention the speedometer error.

The equivalent diameter and width to 195/70R14 in 15, 16 and 17 inch are...

195 75R15

195 60R16

195 50R17

205 60R15 is about the same as stock an 1/4" wider

225 50R15 is one inch less tall and about one inch wider than stock

225 55R15 is about perfect for height, and an inch wider than stock

I understand that, and within a set range of error that's why I chose those sizes. I don't know that any 225/55r15 tires are even produced at this time, but there are 225/50's. Yet another reason I'm looking at 16's, I suppose. It's really frustrating because I've only seen the one classic style wheel in 16 that I like, or a TE37 if I want to update the look a bit.
