anyone have tips on getting the water pump off? seems like a special tool might be needed?

Remove ALL the bolts? No special tools needed, just 10mm and 12mm wrenches. Unless some of the bolts have been replaced with ones with bigger heads.
Once all the bolts are loose (one can't be removed all the way, it's trapped behind the pulley) it pulls straight off.

knock vertically on the pulley. My PO had RTV instead of a gasket so it was glued good on the front cover...
