Apollo77
It was taken from under the passenger door looking at the driver side Quote Link to comment
wayno
In the pic library, in your case, the derickisjapanese bucket, hover on the pic until three lines appear in the upper left corner of the pic. Share is one of the choices that will appear. Click on IMG code and paste on the forum page. Photobucket has very long load times, so clicking on the pic to view it, and then copying it from there, makes it take so much longer. BTW - I can't make heads or tails out of that transmission pic. To me it looks like the tailshaft housing is busted wide open, you can see kind of a ragged line, that is the wall of the case pushed open a couple inches. See just to the left of where the line of fluid starts down where the case looks notched, that is broken, and that 1/4 inch piece of metal is the inside of the case, just to the left of the jagged piece is the cross member. Apollo77
I'll take some better pix tomorrow Quote Link to comment
wayno
I would say that it is a good picture, one has to just look close. I don't think that one is going to be fixed with a rear case. Did you lose 5th and reverse? Quote Link to comment
Apollo77
No, all gears work as normal. Only thing that happened is one day last week Rev gave be some binding and I thought my throwout was going. On the way home I had a hard time getting in gear, but after that night it's been driving normal Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Probably pushed a chunk of gear against the case, binding the linkage. When the case gave out, the piece was no longer in the way. That 78 trans should swap right in. Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
All I see is a grimy tailhousing with oil leaking out. The dark line behind the tailhousing looks like the trans mount. But more on point,if the tailhousing actually broke, then buying a replacement trans will be the cheaper option. Quote Link to comment
Apollo77
Thanks for the info guys, I have been lucky that I haven't had any Trans problems in the 15 years that I've owned the truck. It was bound to happen. Quote Link to comment
wayno
I don't know, maybe a better photo is needed, if you take a better one where we can see the hole/damage and post the link like you did before, I can grab the IMG code and post it. I am thinking that what looks like the tranny mount is in fact the case being pushed out a couple inches at the bottom, but my eyesight isn't what it used to be. :( Quote Link to comment
Apollo77
And the preferred oil is? Quote Link to comment
Rick-rat
Gear oil that is yellow metal safe, I believe GL-4 1 Quote Link to comment
Apollo77
There's a few that are listed as gl4 safe with different viscositys but none say yellow or gold safe. Quote Link to comment
Rick-rat
Search GL-4 gear oil, if you find GL-4 it should be good, NAPA has staylube Quote Link to comment
wayno
I was wrong, it must have been my eyes, that metal didn't look like a tranny mount to me, it just didn't look like an even bottom line, but obviously that is what it was. I wonder what could have made that hole from the inside. Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
And the preferred oil is? StaLube GL-4 from Napa will do you well. Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Yep, that is broken. Quote Link to comment
Apollo77
Yep, that is broken. Nah it drives just fine ;) What viscosity should I shoot for? I had to but something to put in so I could get to the shop and got a valvoline 75w-90 1 Quote Link to comment
Apollo77
I got this, use other nah? Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
That looks like axle lube with the limited slip text. Does it state GL-4? Quote Link to comment
Apollo77
None at the auto zone I was at stated that it WAS gl4, just gl4 safe Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
In a pinch, lube is lube. The fluid you want will say yellow-safe or brlnze-safe. Mostly you will find it in 75w-90 for weight. The StaLube should be the easiest, most readily available to get ahold of. Almost every maker has a yellow safe fluid...Stores don't stock it though because modern cars do not require this stuff. Go to Napa. Should be on the shelf at most stores. Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
I think what flatcat is trying to say is - oil is oil, but you would be much happier if you used the proper oil. Yes, the proper oil will help the transmission shift smoother. GL-4, not GL-5. I use Redline MT-90, but it's expensive and I don't want customers complaining about poor shifting. Lockleaf
Synchromesh manual transmutation fluid is yellow metal safe and has been used with good results. Quote Link to comment
