Newbie 73 620 fixer upper

Hey everyone. I have a 73 620 in pretty good shape. The engine is strong I'm just trying to fine tune everything else. I love these trucks and the Datsun cars. I have a some knowledge in mechanics and am looking to learn with my truck. I'm asking you guys for any and all advice on this pup.

Currently I have put a 32/36 Weber on it since the original carb died... wondering if I should have done something different. (Other brands for example. The carb was beyond restoration) I'd rather not have to stall my truck everytime I turn it off to avoid the dieseling.

You may have a lot of carbon build up in your engine causing the run-on.

After I did my head, that problem stopped, but it really didn't bother me much before.

Just something carbed engines do as they get older, unless you start adding a bunch of garbage to the carb, like solenoids.

Not all webers can have the idle selinoid installed  the manual type can not be converted. the idle jet holder is to small. the 32/36 DGV-IE come with the selinoid which has a bigger diameter. so the jets are different on them so the needle can fit in and plug the jet

run on is common on the open chamber heads. One can try adjust the timming or run super gas.

 

Every now and then I get a cup of water and rev the motor and slightly pour a little water in the carb to clean the carbon. But be careful. just a little at time till it lowers the rpm then rev motor and pour tiny amount. this might help

Back in the day that was called a coke bottle tune-up.

Needs to be done on a hot engine.

The amount of black crap that blows out the tail pipe is amazing.

Hint, don't have another car parked behind it.....

 

I had bought a vega for $50 when I had went back to tech school around '79-'80, that had a horrible hammering noise coming out of it.

Had good oil pressure, so I didn't think it was a bearing problem.

A buddy of mine told me about the coke bottle tune-up, and I gave it a try.

It turned out that due to oil usage, the carbon deposits on the head & pistons were hitting each other.

After the 12oz bottle of water was run through it, and the resulting black cloud, there was no more knocking :)

Thanks guys! I ended up sending my carb in to redline to help me out because there was some other stuff going on with it as well and i dont like to let warranties go to waste. Anyway. They told me that with the right sized idle jets there should not be any dieseling, but I'm not sure. Im still learning. So im wondering if i need that solenoid or if I can get these jets to work. They didnt specify if i needed larger or smaller, just a different size. 

original jets: Primary:60 secondary:50

new jets going in today: 65&55

My way of stopping the dieseling is to leave the truck in gear and turn it off while letting off the clutch at the same time. My main concern is how bad basically stalling it to turn it off is.

My issue right now is every once and awhile I will start my truck in the morning (or mid-day) for work and stop some where on my way. When I go back to start my truck again, its a little rough but starts, then when on a hill it dies and wont start until i get off work and can come back to it. sounds and acts like the carb....getting flooded? being adjusted wrong? (even though the adjustment is often checked on)
