From what I have heard from friends of mine, pretty bold claiming I have friends, Hagerty Insurance does the best job taking care of you if something does happen.

I asked AAA and they do not offer the coverage that Hagerty does. Grundy would be my second choice.

I believe Hagerty has a minimum worth type clause(?) in their insurance ,, car has to be worth at least something like $4000.  and they require you to take pictures of vehicle from multiple angles and send them... At least they did when my 86 year old dad got insurance for a 67 buick skylark this last July..

Thanks go out to to UberKevin for doing that for him

I don't plan to daily drive the car at all, but anecdotally from various places on the web it sounds like some of the classic insurers are pretty strict about constitutes "pleasure drives". Anyone here ever have trouble with claims or coverage if driving somewhere then leaving cars unattended (parked) or because of where/why you're driving? Is it better to try to find coverage under a normal policy to avoid the hassle?

When I talked to the DMV in Washington about this subject, I asked about miles driven restrictions with classic plates, they said that the auto insurance company dictates them rules and they(DMV) support them on that issue.

This always made me wonder if I could get Classic plates and just buy normal insurance, is that a loop hole for mileage, likely not, as I have heard that if you drive your classic plated vehicle to the store you can get a ticket unless there are several other cars at the store defining it as a classic car meet in the parking lot, as classic car plated vehicles are not daily driven cars, so no beer runs or grocery shopping.

The Sunday drive is the only legal thing that I know of for a drive that is not going to or coming from a classic car function.

If the cops searched golf course parking lots they could make a killing some days during the summer around here.

I use Hagerty as well for a couple of cars I own and pay about $220 a year with values of $7500 and $20k. As others have mentioned, they do want the vehicles in a locked garage but there is no mileage limitation that I'm aware of. You can't use a vehicle they insure as your DD or for routine trips, but they don't say anything other than that. Hagerty does ask questions about the type of driving you'll be doing, but I checked most of them and didn't have any problems adding my cars.

This is directly from the Hagerty website:

Flexible Usage

Our policy allows you occasional pleasure use with no fixed mileage restrictions**. With Hagerty, you can go for a weekend drive, take your vehicle up to the local ice cream shop or attend unlimited events and cruises.

** Occasional pleasure use does not mean use for daily driving to and from work or school, routine shopping, etc.

With the "collector plates" thing, I got pulled of when I was daily driving my 510 for the specific reason that I was was driving with collector plates. In Washington the vehicle is only to be used to go to car shows and to get work done, according to the cop that pullled me over. That being said I drove the 510 daily for another 2 years and didn't have any problems.

Why would you do that? It costs about the same as liability insurance and Hagerty is FULL coverage, liability quote for my dime during a six month period was $122.00 SIX MONTHS, meaning a year of liability would cost $244.00......full coverage with Hagerty was $258 for 12 months....its a no brainer, get Hagerty.

Thanks for all the replies. My biggest gripe is that my idea of a pleasure trip, much like my motorcycle, and like Rick-rat said, is any time I drive the car. Just worried about the how much a classic policy would limit my use of the car. All the feedback from you guys who've used these insurers is helpful though.

When you are going on a pleasure trip... just make sure the end point is a car show. If you get in an accident... you got in an accident on the way to a car show. When you are going to get groceries... make sure you stop by a car show.

I think I might switch to hagerty. My insurance wouldn't insure as a classic car.. cause it's not all one color. I was like... wtf. Costs around $250 a year regardless.. might as well get better coverage for the same price.

I had my 210 (Stanley) insured with State Farm's classic ins but what they insured him for was sad. I've had Hagerty 2-3 years now, have more insurance on him and I pay $116 a year. When I first called, the dude I talked to said they don't normally insure cars like mine, ie the 210 cause it's the less popular model is what I assumed. He asked for an exterior shot, engine and trunk. I sent pics inside, outside and engine (I didn't have one of the trunk and the car was at my mom's place at the time) he was pretty wowed by the condition. They do like for your car to be garaged and they do ask how many miles you put on it but they don't ask for mileage every year so I wouldn't even worry about that.
