All SAE bolts and screws I have run across are all fine thread from the factory.   For that matter all the Metrics used are also of a fine threaded variety.  This does not mean that durint the time the vehicles have been in the general public that some bonehead has not forced a course SAE or even a metric bolt in fucking up the threads!

4-48 is correct....
I checked 4-40 and wouldn't go....
Checked a different switch and the 4-48 fit like it should....

 

so I need a small drill bit (smaller than 4-48) and 4-48 tap?  That will fit the stock set screws for the knobs?

Yes that is the stock set screw size... the tap and drill size is correct...
