It looks like the knob comes off, correct?

I found this cable - http://www.new-datsun-parts.com/images/cin22.jpghere at - http://www.new-datsun-parts.com/datsun-pickup-parts.html. It's listed for a J13, but I bet it would work. The same part number is listed on the 620 page too - http://www.new-datsun-parts.com/datsun-pl620-truck-parts.html

You sure the knob doesn't come off? The one in my roadster gets removed by pushing it all the way in, rotating counterclockwise, and then pulling it off.

To do this, you may need to pull the choke out, hold the shaft in place with a pair of pliers, and then try the method above.

All the knobs on a 520/521 are mounted the same, they all come off, even the cigarette lighter knob comes off, but that one unscrews while the rest have a small screw that holds them in position.

The cigarette knob in this photo is not a 521 knob, it is there for reference as it looks the same but is smaller like the rest of the knobs.

Below is a photo of my 521 kingcab turbodiesel dash, the choke knob on the lower right is connected to a light switch as I didn't want a unused choke cable in the engine compartment or under the dash either, so I used a headlight switch to mount it, also you can see a stock cigarette lighter knob in between the boost and EGT gauge.

Problem is that cable is threaded end where as stock is just a square end and set screw.  Got to figure out a way to put stock knob on this cable.  I think it came from a 510 but no way of knowing for sure.

6-32, maybe? Don't quote me on that. If you have taps, just try to match the screw up to one.

Maybe, but it may also be metric. They were mixing and matching metric and SAE in that era.

You could fill the OEM knob with epoxy (JB Weld) and drill-n-tap it for the new cable.

Damn came home today and heard some weird noises under the hood so I kicked the fender and 3 squirrels ran out from under the truck.  Popped the hood and it looked like they were eating acorns in the engine bay.

yeah, that was my first thought.  I guess other than parking it in my garage I got no way of stopping them from climbing up and in.

521 body parts are SAE. Dash knob set screws would either be #6-32 or a #4-40.

Well definately not 6-32... to big...

The screw I took out matched a 4-48 tap... but the tap seemed loose in the threaded hole.... so I am not 100% convinced I am right... gonna try to borrow a 4-40 tap and see how that fits or bring a switch to work tomorrow and use the thread gauges to figure it out .... I need 2 screws for my switch so I need to figure it out eventually anyhow ...

All SAE bolts and screws I have run across are all fine thread from the factory.   For that matter all the Metrics used are also of a fine threaded variety.  This does not mean that durint the time the vehicles have been in the general public that some bonehead has not forced a course SAE or even a metric bolt in fucking up the threads!

4-48 is correct....

I checked 4-40 and wouldn't go....

Checked a different switch and the 4-48 fit like it should....

so I need a small drill bit (smaller than 4-48) and 4-48 tap?  That will fit the stock set screws for the knobs?

Yes that is the stock set screw size... the tap and drill size is correct...

installing a tach and wondering where I can get switched 12v for power?  Anyone know?   Crash mentioned ignition switch which was white, b/w, b/y and b/r but not sure which to tap into.   Can I also just wire the light wire to the power wire so the light is always on the tach?
