"New" 1974 B210 & H145, H150 Differential Questions.

I am now a proud owner of a 1974 B210 sedan.

Very exited about finally owning a non-smog B210.

My 78 runs perfect, but California emissions laws prevents me from any kind of power-plant upgrades.

This "new" B has an A13 engine with automatic transmission.

I want to do an A14 engine and 5 speed transmission upgrade on it.

I been reading on the 1200 Tech Wiki page that in order to do this right I will also need to do an differential swap from the current H145 to the H150.

Is this accurate?

If I do the engine and transmission upgrade and leave the H145 differential would I notice the difference?

If I do decide to change the differential can I use the H145 housing?

What would be the easiest way to do the differential swap?

Here is a picture of my "new" B210. Looks very rough, but has tons of potential.

Technically you still have to have all the emissions equipment in place to pass a possible, though unlikely visual, inspection even though there are no actual smog testing. If you replace the engine, to be legal it should be reported and certified and it has to pass emissions for the year of the swapped engine. Again unlikely anyone will notice the difference between an A12 and an A anything else. Just saying it could happen. So be aware of any risk first no matter how slight.

The H-150 is just a stronger differential to reflect the stronger engine swap. That's all. It will run just fine with the H-145. The H-150 is just stronger. You won't know the difference unless you also change the differential ratio.

No you can't use the H-145 housing, the H-150 won't fit inside. You will have to swap the whole axle. Unless you plan to run cam and carb up-grades the A14/15 will be fine with the H-145. Do the swap and just keep an eye out for a later H-150 and swap later.

Yes, you can use your H145 rear end housings and by using a 2.5mm spacer/gasket pack, (fit between housing and 3rd member)  you can then run an H150 3rd member gear set. H150 ratios differ, with the 2 most common here being 3.889 or 3.70, the 3.70 came in the B210 GX coupes that ran dogleg 5 speeds. This gives you some options for tire height vs differential ratio, not a lot but some.Note: your drive line flange is different on the H150 cars, so you may want to grab a drive line as well for the engine/trans swap will need one. The dogleg 63A, 5 speed has different splines on the trans end then a 60 4 speed. Now about that A13...

Sierra,

I've got an A15 and 5 speed I plan to pull tomorrow from my 1200. I live in Long Beach so it wouldn't be too far., let me know if you would be interested.

As for the axle questions, because it is a 145 you can get a lot of info here:
