The condenser on the horn mounting bolt, was used for radio noise suppression.

Bracket on front of engine, left side was a mount for an air pump used for exhaust emission reduction..

Lower right spot below fan motor switch was for the choke cable.

Grommet hole above brake line junction, choke cable through firewall to engine.

Still waiting for Rock Auto for Radiator hoses....

From New Datsun Parts I am waiting for new ignition switch and a bunch of fuel tank parts....

This truck is teaching patience....and hunting for used parts on the internet....I am not use to this...the last 5 or 6 projects that I have done there has been a huge aftermarket...old Chevy trucks....vintage VW's and Willys Jeeps.....this old Datsun truck...not so much...

2-1/4"

Personally, I got a section of hose by the foot, but it kinks because it needs the bend (still works fine, at least with the slow as hell California vapor recovery gas pumps).  I actually ordered the above 2" hose a while back but haven't gotten around to test fitting it.  Maybe this weekend.  I bought it on a whim...maybe I should have bought the 2-1/4" as I couldn't remember what diameter it should be.

Spent a ton of money on it....we still have a no start situation....

The best thing about this vehicle...I can push in and out of the garage alone....

Might be thinking about selling it.....

I was told it ran and drove when I bought it...it did not...

just got off the phone with a real mechanic from where I work...I am throwing this Jerry Hicks thing up on my tow dolly and we are gonna let him figure it out....I dont have the patience for this stuff....

I like the plug in cars better right now...you plug them in and they tell you what parts to swap out...

Hopefullyou got new battery cables also. as thos thin ones over time crack. get the thick USA made ones and the +red one with the extra wire for the 521 to power the fuse box.

My New Made in China 3 corerad I had to offset back  a 1/4 inch or so. and I also reran the wires that went infront of the rad, I ran them on top and used fiberglass tape to keep them protected.

As in your looks like they might pinch and your have some eletrical issues later is the wire wear on the edges

save your old rad soeme places can fix them and or make them 3 cores if the top and bottoms are still good

you watch my vid on Youtube

Put in hainz L series should come up

Willing to part it out?

Hi d.p.

Kinda wanna see the whole thing go....I am not with Datsuns yet....I just need a runner...not someones cobbled up idea of a Datsun truck...

I actually did some electrical tests last night the last one I did the motor actually tried to fire...that was until the January 2016 battery crapped out on it...so we will take some more of my stash $$$$ and go get a new battery....

I do really hope these vehicles are good investments.....

Thanks for asking tho...

I do drive a 1970 521 as a daily driver.   A well maintained Datsun can be reliable, and trusted to get you back home at the end of the day.

But, (you knew that was coming) you have to remember is is a 45 or more old vehicle.   Vehicles that old were built with 3,000 mile service intervals, and not just an oil change.   Also, there is a really good chance the previous owners did not maintain it properly, or made modifications that also compromise its reliability.

Car manufactures realized car owners are lazy, and do not like to have to maintain cars, and also EPA mandated engine to run for 100,000 miles before needing work, like a spark plug change, or a fuel system tune up.   A 1970 Datsun required checks of the points, spark plugs, carb adjustments, and much more every 3,000 miles, more major work at 6,000 miles, and replacement of plugs and points at 12,000 miles.  The chassis requires similar work.  greasing, changing fluids, adjusting brakes, checking suspension parts for wear, that sort of thing.

Then factor in the ravages of time. Steel rusts away, rubber parts lose flexibility, plastic parts parts deteriorate because of sun damage.  All that has to be dealt with.   This is true of any car from the 1970's.

It can take a long time to get a Datsun back up to a point it is reliable, and even then you need to start to do the normal maintenance that was required on a new Datsun, to keep it reliable, but it can be done.

The O ring for the tank sender is easy. Take the old one or sender and go to NAPA or a shop that fixes hydraulic equipment. NAPA is probably the easiest/cheapest. Have them go through their O ring selection box. Any auto supply or fastener shop should have  lots. I've re-used them by carful cleaning the rust of them.

If welding on the tank just fill with water and leave a bubble near where the welding will be done. Ive soldered holes up before doing this.

No start conditions can be frustrating.   But lets think about the logically.  Engines need three things to run.  Compression, ignition, and fuel.

Check the compression.  Factory spec is 159 PSI, with less than 10% difference.  The engine will run with considerably less compression and a larger difference between cylinders, but better with the factory specification.

Cranking the engine for 10 to 20 seconds with a no start can then give you a big clue.  Go and smell the exhaust.  If you smell gas, suspect the ignition.  I you do not smell gas suspect the fuel system.

No ignition, check for positive at the plus side of the ignition coil.  Then check the points, if using them.  Make sure the timing is close.  10 degrees BTDC will start almost any engine.  I like to use a spark tester that will set a good 3/8 to 1/2 inch of a gap to test for spark at the plug.  A spark plug outside of the cylinder with a .030 gap will still fire with a weak ignition system, but the higher voltage required in a cylinder under compression, the same plug may not fire.

No fuel, check the float bowl in the carb.  If the float level is OK, check for a good strong squirt of gas from the accelerator pump when working the throttle.  Even with no fuel from the carb, an engine with good compression and good ignition should run briefly by pouring a little bit of fuel down the carb.

I pull the cover and ck the lash on the valves then ck the cam timming then the distributor timming.  if all good then ck the carb for fuel squirting in carb. and tightness(no vaccum leaks)

ck the distributor oif it fires or not. If not ck for 12volt at the ballast resisitor and about 6 volts at other side resisitor(means the ballast is good)  then pull the center coil wire place near grounds and see if sparks.  soemtimes the START on switch might not work, this bypasses the resisitor but its usually already 2 wires hooked up to the to the plus side coil. So assume its good.

ck if the points are gapped. Most people cant even handle this nowadays. Seen alot of point issues over the years. People used to electronic ignitions

HI Ratsun

Went to my local NAPA store....picked up another battery for it...put the ole plastic can strapped to the frame rail on it....and with a little bit of gas in the carb...it ran...not for long but it ran...

No fuel in the fuel pump...

Postage is crazy for these parts.....

Cant seem to be be able to find anybody even close to me that sells this stuff...not just west coast shipping but Canadian West coast shipping...

Blew the existing fuel line out to make sure eveything was clear...someone cobbled up a rubber hose from the fuel pump to the fuel tank...to get it running around my back door yard...I will leave that set up in place...

Waiting for parts from a Illinois NAPA warehouse....

Hi Thisismatt

Yuppers it was "New-Datsun-parts".....kinda sad all the Datsun stuff is on the left cost and I am on the right coast....the new datsun guys dont even have a phone number where you can call them...

This is the first place where you cant pick up the phone and talk to a person...never seen this before...my vintage Chevy's and my Willys stuff too you could always call them up...this is a first...

I am learning this Datsun stuff is whole new breed of cat for sure...
