Valvebounce
How long should a lefthand side axle for a 620 be? Mine will not go in. I fed the end of my measuring tape in the axle tube, and it appears the axle is 20mm too long? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Need more info. Is this the original axle from that side? Or are you just replacing it? Quote Link to comment
Valvebounce
It's the axle from a '79. my diff is from a '73. the center assembly is out of a Datsun Cedric of some kind. (3.888:1 ratio) These didn't use a thrust block. So as I lost my original head (I just can't find it) I fitted the thrust block from a 720 diff head which a friend swapped out because it was noisy Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
Wrong spline on shaft. Will not co into side gear. That's the first thing that comes to mind. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The disc brake trucks are wider. All 521/620/720 and any H-190 equipped D21, Xterra were all 29 spline axles. Quote Link to comment
Valvebounce
Did 620s change the spline during their production run? The original axle on the right side goes in fine. Quote Link to comment
Valvebounce
To give you an idea where it sits, the studs on the backing plate poke through the holes in the axle tube flange almost enough to get a nut started. Almost, but not quite. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Measure the other side carefully and trim the long side? There's lots of spline and the side gears only use an inch or so engagement. Cut slowly so heat doesn't remove any temper. Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
Cut it with a thin cutoff wheel on a handheld grinder for best results. Be sure to radius the corners though. Quote Link to comment
Valvebounce
I'd need to dismantle the backing plate, and put the axle in the lathe so as to replicate the reduced end where it rubs against the thrust block too. Quote Link to comment
