Bought this car in april and I love it just don't get to drive much till it breaks again. So, antifreeze on the floorboard..leaky watercock...replaced. Had the waterpump, fanclutch belt and coil replaced in may. Have replaced numerous hoses, the pcv valve, fuel filter, oil n filter, plugs, wires and on n on. When i turn on the defroster it squeals like mad. Is it belt tension?

The heater squeals? Probably the fan inside rubbing something.

Is it only on defrost? What about just heat?

The engine fan belt squeals? The additional load on the alternator can cause the belt to slip if it's loose or worn out. Check the belt tension.... after all the clutch fan was replaced and the belt may need tightening.

Maybe compressor is faulty or belt is loose.

Does the noise come and go when you switch it on?

This car has AC?

The noise starts when the heat and or defrost are turned on. The engine "pulls down" then it starts. If I leave the heat off it runs like a champ. But, October in Idaho need I say more?

It has working ac, or did have when I tried it back in aug. I'm happy when it just runs..the car that is. We've not managed to go two weeks without an issue. It was an abused car..this is a 280zx rescue.

You still haven't said if the noise in in the heater or out in the engine bay.

Heat and defrost shouldn't turn the air conditioner compressor on. As I said the alternator belt also drives the clutch fan, check the belt tension.

If the noise is in the heater, the fan is rubbing something.

Poor water on belts when noise is present.

Goes away? Belts. Noise stays? Faulty part.

Its the v-belt slipping. Just tighten it or replace the belt and tighten enough until it stops squealing. If the belt is wet, it will squeak easier.

Thank you Ted!
