Maybe very small vacuum leak. Carb bolts tight? any vacuum lined directly connected to the intake loose or cracked?

Worked on the Laurel again.

I checked the ignition timing with my timing light and it was at 2-3 degrees! So I set it at 10° like my FSM suggests for the L20a and L24.

 

I didn't touch the choke yet because I want to see what it does with this timing setting. If it still has a hickup when cold I will put it 1 setting richer.

Tomorrow evening maybe the idle mixture setting like you descriped Mike!

 

And maybe this weekend the valves.

Make it run better and better is fun to do!

2-3 degrees is way, way, retarded. This will ad tonnes of torque and go power.

 

 

Try a notch richer but be prepared to add several more to get it right.

I always reck the timming as its simple and cheap. Sometimes be surprised how it can change. Maybe distributor is wearing abit.

 

I  cheak my timming and carb adjust every 6 months  on my daily driver

I only have the car for a couple of month's and they previous owner never heard of maintanance.....

This morning it did better when cold so maybe I adjust it a little bit tonight.

The carb is still doing fine! I idled high one time again but the throttle cable was to tight so after adjusting it runs great. Starts direct and runs strong!
