i have a 68" 520

just got the SR20DET mounted.

i would like to keep the rear axle and change the gears.

are there any other datsun that are interchangeable?

what ratio would be good?

any stores that still have stock or am i going to have to find them used?

thanks.

All 521/620/720 2wd (some early 720 4x4) D-21 4 cylinders trucks and even Xterras used the H-190 differential. The 810 and Maxima wagons, '82-'83 S110 (200sx), '74 and up 610 wagons, the 510 wagon and the Roadster..... if you just want the crown and pinion gears. If you want to just swap the third member only trucks have the 29 spline gears that your axles fit into. You can swap your 29 spline side gears with a car's 23 spline side gears if careful.

Gears?

The 720 have the widest range depending on model and year, and they are relatively newer. 720s range from 3.364, 3.545, 3.70, 3.889, 4.11, 4.375, to 4.625

Less commonly found H-190 but you never know....

Roadster........................... 3.90

510 wagon........................ 3.90

521all................................ 4.375

610 wagon, '75 and on..... 3.70

810 wagon........................ 3.70 and 3.90 after '78

Maxima............................. 3.545 st. and 3.545 auto

S110 (200sx).................... 3.545 st. and 3.70 auto

S12................................... 3.70 st. and 3.889 auto early '84 only.

D-21 Hardbody.................. 3.545, 3.90 and 3.889

Lots of options to choose from. Well the SR is only 2 liters and without boost will drive like a 2 liter at low speed. Still it sure doesn't need the J13's 4.875 ratio gears. Sort of like a race horse pulling a heavy wagon. The 520 is relatively heavy, certainly 300 pounds more than a 510.

I think a 4.11 would be a good place to start if too low go 3.90, but if you are after mileage more than performance perhaps a 3.70? The 4.11 will rev quicker and get you boostin' sooner.

It really kinda depends on what you are trying to accomplish, to go really fast down the quarter mile, or lower your RPMs on the hiway.

All rear gears are interchangeable from your Datsun 520 truck thru the 1986 2wd Nissan 720 truck, the 3.364 gears are very hard to find, so are the 3.545 gears and 4.625 gears, even harder to find are the LSD versions, they are very rare.

Forgot about LSD, wayno. Probably will need it with an SR. Yes the '88 through '93 D21 Hardbodys had LSD but hold on.... it was a rare option. Fastest way to find one is locate a 4 cylinder powered D21 of those years and look at the rear of the differential. There will be a stamp sized ORANGE sticker saying LSD or USE ONLY LSD OIL

Take a rag. Expect to check hundreds to find one..... maybe.

81-83 200sx is NOT good for the B210. It's too wide, and it doesn't bolt in, it has 4-link connectors instead of leaf spring plates for the B210. The primary swap candidate is 320 pickup. The 200SX units work in the B310 (210).

Here is a list of vehicles that used the H190:
  • Datsun SPL311/SRL311 "Roadster/Sports"
  • Datsun 410/411
  • Datsun 510 Wagon
  • Datsun 320 Pickup
  • Datsun 520 Pickup
  • Datsun 620 Pickup
  • Datsun 720 Pickup
  • Datsun S110 "200SX" from 1982-1983 (disk brakes)
  • Nissan S12 "200SX" 1984 (drum brakes)
  • Datsun 810 wagon
  • Datsun 910 wagon "810"
  • Nissan D21/D21U pickup
  • Nissan D22 pickup
and i was wondering if any of these would work?
thanks for the help.

Top one, the gears will work, but it's from a car which means the axle spline count is different than the truck. You would need swap to that ring/pinion on to your carrier.

Bottom, yeah that would be fine for you. Should bolt right in.

That 3.54 seems super sluggish though.

Do you have any salvage yards near you that might have a 720 in them.

I'd put something close to a 4.1 or 3.9 in an SR powered something.

Maybe 3.7 at the most.

i found this list:

http://forums.nicoclub.com/the-ultimate-final-drive-gear-ratio-thread-t228683.html

S14 - SR20DET - MT - R200V - 3.692

dose this mean using the 3.7 ratio, would work well?

What does an S14 and a 520 weigh??? If similar, no problem. If you want more acceleration go 3.90 or 4.11

S13 = 2,700 lb

520 = 2,200 lb - 2,500 stock

i am missing a lot of my truck, so may be a lill lighter.

i would like to go with your recommendation of 3.90 i will keep looking, i just think it is going to be hard to find.

so if i pull the ring and pinion off it, will fit in my 520. will the spline on the pinion fit my drive shaft mount?

Will the 520 flange mate to the new pinion spline? Good question. Most all H-190s I have seen were the same. I did get an early 4v4 diff from a 720 and no the spline was not the same as the earlier 2wd ones. I was pissed after all that work.

Some of the later 4X4 720s had larger pinion flanges, I believe that is was because they had a C200 rearend, but that doesn't mean they didn't have them on H190s also.

I have had no issues with any 2wd drivelines bolting onto the H190 pinion flange.

I have a nice and tight 390 gearset, I also have a nice 370 gearset, PM me

The later H190 LSDs I get out of Japan all come with the large diameter pinion bearings, in an iron housing.

But the spline on the pinions are the same, and my aluminum carrier 620 flange fit right on.

Like everything Nissan makes, you can find all sorts of different versions.

I think there are over 15 versions of R200 shafts. 28,29,30, and 31 spline, with 4 different flange bolt patterns, plus several different spline counts & bolt patterns for the viscous LSDs.

This. 2wd seem all the same. I thought I would simply fit my 620 flange on but it was too small to fit the 4x4 pinion spline. I ended up machining the 620 flange off and welding it to the 4x4 one to get the bolt pattern
